Whitworth Wins Third Straight All-Sports Trophy
SPOKANE, Wash. - Whitworth University rolled to victory in the chase for the 2009-2010 McIlroy-Lewis All-Sports trophy by claiming nine championships out of 18 Northwest Conference sports over the course of the academic year. The all-sports championship is the Pirates' third in a row.
Whitworth won or shared four more NWC championships during the spring season to increase its total for the year to nine. The Pirates won a second straight title in women's tennis, won men's track and field, won men's golf, and shared the title in women's golf with George Fox. Whitworth finished with 267 points, the highest total for any winning school since the scoring system was changed after the 1998-99 year.
Linfield College moved into second place by scoring 124 points in the spring for a final tally of 238. The Wildcats claimed titles in baseball and softball (7th straight), while finishing second in men's tennis, women's tennis and men's golf.
Willamette University won its ninth consecutive title in women's track and field and earned runner-up finishes in softball and men's track and field to take third in the final all-sports standings with 192 points.
The University of Puget Sound finished in fourth place with 189 points, while Pacific Lutheran University was fifth with 175 points.
Whitman College won its third straight men's tennis championship and finished sixth with 146 points.
Lewis & Clark finished in seventh place with 131 points, just ahead of George Fox University (129) and Pacific University (121). GFU's co-championship in women's golf is the school's first.
The Northwest Conference All-Sports Trophy recognizes athletic excellence among Northwest Conference institutions across all fields of competition. It is named in honor of John Lewis, the baseball coach (1947-72), basketball coach (1947-67) and athletics director (1952- 72) at Willamette University; and Jane McIlroy, Linfield College's women's athletics director and physical education professor from 1950- 82 who also coached field hockey (1952-81), basketball, volleyball, softball and tennis.
