Whitworth Earns 2013-14 McIlroy-Lewis All-Sports Trophy

Hillsboro, Ore. - Whitworth University closed out the 2013-14 academic year with its seventh consecutive Northwest Conference McIlroy-Lewis All-Sports trophy.

The Pirates earned an NWC championship in men's track & field and second-place finishes in women's tennis, men's golf and women's track & field for a total 248 points extending its lead from three to 48 points.

Pacific Lutheran University moved up into the second spot with an NWC title in men's golf and a second-place finish in baseball for 201 points.  Puget Sound dropped from second place through the winter standings into the third spot with 196 points. 

Whitman dropped from third place through the winter to fourth in the final standings with 189 points.  The Missionaries captured a first-place finish in both men's and women's tennis and a second-place finish in women's golf this spring.

Willamette stays in fifth place with 182 points and Linfield follows with 174 points after earning an NWC crown in both baseball and softball.

George Fox moves up from the ninth spot and finishes in seventh with 143 points after claiming an NWC title in both women's golf and women's track & field.   Pacific University (142) finishes the year in eighth place with three second place finishes in softball, men's tennis and men's track & field, while Lewis & Clark brings its total points to 133 for ninth place.

The Northwest Conference All-Sports Trophy recognizes athletic excellence among Northwest Conference institutions across all fields of competition. It is named in honor of John Lewis, the baseball coach (1947-72), basketball coach (1947-67) and athletics director (1952- 72) at Willamette University; and Jane McIlroy, Linfield College's women's athletics director and physical education professor from 1950- 82 who also coached field hockey (1952-81), basketball, volleyball, softball and tennis.
