Whitworth Earns Sixth Straight McIlroy-Lewis All-Sports trophy
Hillsboro, Ore. - Whitworth University closed out the 2012-13 academic year with its sixth consecutive Northwest Conference McIlroy-Lewis All-Sports trophy.
The Pirates earned a NWC championship in men’s golf and men's track & field for a total 241 points extending its lead from 24 to 47 points.
Pacific Lutheran used a second-place finish in softball, third-place finish in men’s tennis and a fourth-place finish in both men’s golf and men’s track & field to move from fifth place through the winter to second place in the final standings with 194 points.
Puget Sound dropped into the third spot with 181 points. Willamette moves from sixth to fourth with 178 points and Whitman follows with 173 points after earning an NWC title in both men’s and women’s tennis this spring.
Linfield finishes in the number six spot with 169 points after claiming an NWC crown in both baseball and softball and finishing second at the men’s golf championship. Lewis & Clark College (157) edged out Pacific University (156) for seventh place, while George Fox won both the NWC women’s golf and women’s track & field championships to bring its total points to 147 for ninth place.
The Northwest Conference All-Sports Trophy recognizes athletic excellence among Northwest Conference institutions across all fields of competition. It is named in honor of John Lewis, the baseball coach (1947-72), basketball coach (1947-67) and athletics director (1952- 72) at Willamette University; and Jane McIlroy, Linfield College's women's athletics director and physical education professor from 1950- 82 who also coached field hockey (1952-81), basketball, volleyball, softball and tennis.
