Whitworth Takes All-Sports Lead After Fall Season

SPOKANE, Wash. - Two-time defending champion Whitworth University has opened up a ten point lead over Willamette University and the rest of the Northwest Conference after the fall season in the race for the 2009-10 McIlroy-Lewis All-Sports Trophy.
Whitworth won two conference titles and added a pair of runner-up finishes to pick up 88 points during the fall season. The Pirates claimed NWC championships in women's cross country and men's soccer, while finishing second in men's cross country and women's soccer.
Willamette University won the men's cross country championship and finished second in football. The Bearcats are in second place with 78 points.
Linfield College claimed the 2009 NWC football championship and sits in third place with 71 points.
Pacific Lutheran University and University of Puget Sound are tied for fourth place with 66 points. PLU won the 2009 NWC volleyball title, while Puget Sound claimed yet another women's soccer crown.
Whitman College is sixth (49), followed by Lewis & Clark College (45), Pacific University (32) and George Fox University (23).
The Northwest Conference All-Sports Trophy recognizes athletic excellence among Northwest Conference institutions across all fields of competition. It is named in honor of John Lewis, the baseball coach (1947-72), basketball coach (1947-67) and athletics director (1952- 72) at Willamette University; and Jane McIlroy, Linfield College's women's athletics director and physical education professor from 1950- 82 who also coached field hockey (1952-81), basketball, volleyball, softball and tennis.
