2002 Northwest Conference Baseball Players of the Week

May 5

NWC Hitter of the Week: Brian Savery (Whitworth, Sr., C, Monroe, Wash.) batted .667 (8/12) with two home runs, a double, nine runs batted in and nine runs scored to lead the Pirates to a series sweep of PLU.
Honorable Mention: Kevin Schjei (Linfield, 3B) went 9/16 with a double, a triple, seven runs scored and five rbi’s in three road wins; Matt Lengwenus (Pacific, OF) was 8/13 with three home runs, a double, a triple, five rbi’s and nine runs scored in three games; Kyle Carothers (Whitman, OF) finished 8/14 with two home runs, eight rbi’s and six runs scored in three games; Jared Moody (PLU, OF) was 10/15 with two doubles, nine rbi’s and five runs scored in three losses.

NWC Pitcher of the Week: Ryan Toivola (Whitman, Sr., Seattle, Wash.) defeated Pacific with a complete-game effort on Saturday, allowing three runs (two earned) on seven hits. He struck out three and walked one.
Honorable Mention: Luke Buchheit (Linfield) earned a complete-game win over UPS, allowing three runs, eight hits, striking out four and walking none; Kurt Reese (Whitworth) allowed four runs (two earned) and six hits in a complete game win over PLU, striking out eight and walking two; Derek Akimoto (Pacific) defeated Whitman, allowing four runs on eight hits in six innings.

April 28

NWC Hitter of the Week: Kaleo Saiki (Linfield, 1B, Molokai, Hawaii) led the Wildcats to a 3-1 week by batting .500 (7/14) with four home runs, 11 runs batted in and eight runs scored.
Honorable Mention: Matt Lengwenus (Pacific, OF) went 11/19 with three home runs, a double, seven runs batted in and nine runs scored as the Boxers went 1-3; Marques Molett (Whitworth, OF) went 7/11 with a home run, two doubles, seven runs batted in and two runs scored in three games; Kevin Tucker (George Fox, 3B) was 8/13 with a home run, two doubles, five runs batted in and five runs scored as the Bruins went 4-0; Drew Randolph (PLU, DH) went 4/8 in three games with a home run, double and three runs scored.

NWC Pitcher of the Week: Jason Andrew (PLU, Sr., Tacoma, Wash.) threw a complete game six-hitter with 15 strikeouts in the 6-0 win over Lewis & Clark.
Honorable Mention: Thomas Chivers (George Fox) earned a win and two saves in three relief appearances, allowing one run and six hits in 8.2 innings; Josh Mills (Whitworth) allowed one run (0 earned) on four hits in six innings of the Pirates’ 16-6 win at Willamette; Eric Anderson (Linfield) allowed four runs on eight hits in 7.1 innings of the 13-5 win over Pacific.

April 21

NWC Hitter of the Week: Kevin Roth (Pacific, Jr., OF, Burlington, Wash.) batted .522 (12/23) in six games, with four home runs, three doubles, 10 runs batted in and 10 runs scored. One of the home runs was his third grand slam of the season.
Honorable Mention: Sam Bunnett (UPS, 1B) went 12/21 in six games with five doubles, scoring 10 times, driving in seven; Rob White (PLU, OF) went 9/17 with two home runs, two doubles, six rbi’s and four runs scored as the Lutes went 3-1; Eric Bell (George Fox, DH) batted .400 (6/15) with three home runs and 11 rbi’s in four games; Mike Cooney (Linfield, OF) went 7/14 with three runs and two rbi’s; Kyle Carothers (Whitman) went 4/11, including his 9th home run.

NWC Pitcher of the Week: Joe Taylor (Lewis & Clark, So., Maple Valley, Calif.) threw a complete-game shutout in Saturday’s win over Pacific, striking out three and allowing seven hits and two walks.
Honorable Mention: Jason Andrew (PLU) went 2-0, including a win in relief vs. UPS and a complete-game effort vs. Whitman, allowing 10 hits, four runs (two earned), two walks, while striking out 17 batters; Steve Pergin (Pacific) went 2-0, allowing three earned runs and 12 hits in two starts; Luke Buchheit (Linfield) allowed two runs in 10 innings, including a complete-game 5-2 win over George Fox on Sunday; Mike Beck (George Fox) defeated Linfield 7-2 with a complete-game effort, allowing 10 hits while striking out five; Ryan Nelson (Whitman) allowed seven hits and one run in six innings of a 3-2 loss to PLU.

April 14

NWC Hitter of the Week: Aaron Keller (Whitworth, Sr., OF, Shoreline, Wash.) batted .615 (8/13) with six runs batted in, six runs scored, a home run, a double and two stolen bases to lead the Pirates to two wins in three games.
Honorable Mention: Danny Richards (Whitman, 2B) went 8/16 in four games with a home run, triple, double and two rbi’s; Eric Bell (George Fox, DH) went 4/7 with five rbi's and four runs scored; Andrew Meade (L&C, 2B) went 5/8 with four doubles and four rbi’s in two wins; Kevin Schjei (Linfield, 3B) was 9/14 with two doubles, 4 rbi’s, and two runs scored in three games.

NWC Pitcher of the Week: Bill Allen (Lewis & Clark, Sr., Eugene, Ore.) threw a complete-game, seven inning shutout of Oregon Tech, allowing only two hits, striking out seven batters and walking one.
Honorable Mention: Kurt Reese (Whitworth) defeated Linfield by allowing three runs on 13 hits over seven innings.

April 7

Co-NWC Hitters of the Week: Adam Zaitz (Whitman, Sr., C, Brier, Wash.) batted .692 (9/13) with three doubles and a grand slam. He drove in eight runs and scored six times in three games. Rob White (PLU, Sr., OF, Enumclaw, Wash.) went 9/18 with three home runs, nine runs batted in and seven runs scored in four games.
Honorable Mention: Kyle Langliers (George Fox, 1B) was 7/15 with a double, a home run, six rbi’s and four runs scored; Ryan Joy (Pacific, C/1B) went 6/17 with two doubles, two home runs, five rbi’s and four runs scored in five games; Keala Fujimori (L&C, OF) went 7/13 with six rbi’s and two runs scored in four games; Pete Doumit (UPS, OF) went 12/20 with a grand slam, eight rbi’s and seven runs scored; Aaron Keller (Whitworth, OF) hit .385 (5/13) with a home run, five rbi’s and three runs scored in three games.

Co-NWC Pitchers of the Week: Kyle Ishimitsu (Pacific, Sr., Aiea, Hawaii) earned a pair of wins, allowing two runs and six hits, while striking out six in nine total innings; Scott Hyde (George Fox, Fr., Grants Pass, Ore.) allowed three runs (two earned) on six hits in seven innings of a 14-3 win over Whitworth.

March 30

NWC Hitter of the Week: Kyle Langliers (George Fox, Sr., 1B, Pleasant Hill, Ore.) led the Bruins to an undefeated week by hitting .524 (11/21) with eight runs batted in, five runs scored and a home run.
Honorable Mention: Brian Savery (Whitworth, C) went 7/14 with a grand slam, eight rbi’s and six runs scored as the Pirates went 3-0; Sean Kinney (Whitman, OF) went 4/9 with six rbi’s (including both game-winners) and a home run as the Missionaries went 2-0; David Moore (Linfield, DH) hit .455 (5/11) with six rbi’s and a grand slam; Drew Ecklund (Willamette) went 6/12 with with six rbi’s and three runs scored; Chris Webb (L&C, C) batted .500 (6/12) with two runs batted in.

NWC Pitcher of the Week: Kurt Reese (Whitworth, Jr., RHP, Hayden Lake, Idaho) allowed no runs on four hits, while striking out six batters, in six innings of Whitworth’s 16-5 win over Lewis & Clark.
Honorable Mention: Jeremy Bishop (Whitman, Sr., RHP, Richland, Wash.) earned a pair of saves, retiring all five batters he faced; Scott Hyde (George Fox, RHP) allowed one run on seven hits in seven innings in a 14-1 win; Jeff Jensen (Willamette) defeated Linfield 5-2 with a complete-game six-hitter, striking out eight; Brian McCoy (Linfield, RHP) allowed six hits, three runs (one earned) in six innings of a 14-7 win.

March 24

NWC Hitter of the Week: Eric Bell (George Fox, Jr., DH, Spokane, Wash.) led the Bruins to a 4-0 week by hitting .462 (6/13) with five home runs, a double, 11 runs batted in and eight runs scored.
Honorable Mention: Kevin Roth (Pacific, OF) went 8/16 with two home runs, seven rbi’s and five runs scored; Ryan Nelson (Whitman, OF) went 3/4 with two home runs and six rbi’s in Whitman’s only game; Rob White (PLU, OF) was 7/16 with two home runs, four rbi’s and three runs scored in four games; Brian Savery (Whitworth, C) was 5/16 with a home run, two doubles and three rbi’s; Kevin Schjei (Linfield, 3B) went 9/15 with two rbi's and six runs scored.

NWC Pitcher of the Week: Jason Andrew (Pacific Lutheran, Sr., Tacoma, Wash.) defeated St. Martin’s 8-1, allowing only four hits while striking out 8 in six innings.
Honorable Mention: Cory Dixon (George Fox) won two games in three relief appearances, allowing three runs and 12 hits in 11 innings; Ryan Toivola (Whitman) defeated UPS, allowing three runs (one earned) and eight hits, while striking out seven; Eric Anderson (Linfield) allowed five hits and struck out six in seven innings over two relief appearances, winning one.

March 17

NWC Hitter of the Week: Daniel Gebbers (Whitworth, Fr., IF, Brewster, Wash.) led Whitworth to a 3-0 week by going 5/15 with two doubles, a triple, five runs batted in and three runs scored.
Honorable Mention: Ryan Joy (Pacific, 1B) went 5/15 with two home runs and three doubles in four games; Drew Ecklund (Willamette) went 8/14 with two doubles and five rbi’s; Kyle Langliers (George Fox, 1B) went 7/13 with a home run, three rbi’s and four runs scored.

NWC Pitcher of the Week: Justin Brown (Willamette, So., RHP, Pendleton, Ore.) had his second complete game win in a row, allowing two runs on eight hits.
Honorable Mention: Jason Andrew (PLU, RHP) allowed four runs in a complete-game win at UPS, striking out seven; Kurt Reese (Whitworth, RHP) allowed one run on five hits in six innings to pick up a win at Whitman; Mark Hinshaw (Whitman, RHP) allowed no earned runs in three relief appearances (seven innings).

March 10

NWC Hitter of the Week: Matt Sorenson (UPS, Jr., IF, Redmond, Wash.) went 7/8 in a split at L&C, scoring five runs and driving in three.
Honorable Mention: Eric Bell (George Fox, DH) was 6/8 with three runs scored and three rbi’s in a split with Pacific; Matt Lengwenus (Pacific, OF) was 4/9 with two home runs and four rbi’s; Kevin Schjei (Linfield, 3B) batted 5/12 with four rbi’s as the Wildcats went 2-1; Scott Biglin (Whitworth, 1B) was 4/7 with a home run and four rbi’s; David Fee (Whitman, OF) went 5/12 with two runs scored and two rbi’s; Andrew Bartels (Willamette, 1B) went 4/10 with two rbi’s and two runs.

Honorable Mention: Brian McCoy (Linfield, RHP) struck out eight in a complete-game 10-1 win over Whitman; Scott Hyde (George Fox, RHP) struck out nine in a complete-game 11-1 win over Pacific; Josh Mills (Whitworth, LHP) stuck out nine and allowed only four hits in a complete game 6-4 win at NNU, allowing only one earned run; Joe Bravo (PLU) went eight innings and allowed only one run on five hits in a 3-2 win over Willamette; Ryan Nelson (Whitman) went 6.3 innings, allowing one earned run and seven hits in a win at Linfield; Damian Munoz (Pacific, RHP) earned a win over George Fox, allowing three runs and striking out four.
