At Puget Sound 99, Pacific 93 (ot)

Forest Grove, Ore. -- Chase Curtiss made two three-pointers in overtime, and Matt Glynn added one, as Puget Sound used the long ball to beat Pacific Saturday, 99-93, in the Boxers' Northwest Conference opener at the Pacific Athletic Center.

Glynn led all scorers with 26 points on 11 of 20 from the field, and Curtiss finished with 17, as the Loggers (10-1, 2-0 NWC) tired the Boxers out with a fast tempo style of game from start to finish.

Joe Van Domelen led five Boxers in double figures with 22 points and nine rebounds on a night that saw the Boxers (2-6, 0-1 NWC) outshoot the Loggers 51 percent to 46 percent.  Branden Kawazoe finished with 18 and B.J. Anderson had 16.

Pacific took an 89-86 lead as overtime began on Erin Gram's only three-pointer of the night, but Glynn's answer at the 4:23 mark started a 13-4 run that closed out the game.  Curtiss made it a six-point lead with his three at the 3:39 mark, then put the Boxers away with his second three with 2:35 left.  Pacific managed only one more field goal in overtime, a lay-in by Rahim Tufts.

The Boxers proved resilient, however, in game that saw them keep pace despite turning the ball over 24 times.  Neither team took more than a five-point lead in the first half until Josh Walker's free throw with 9:01 left gave UPS a 26-20 lead.  Pacific climbed right back into it, trading leads with the Loggers until Glynn hit a three with 1:03 left to give UPS their halftime advantage of five.

UPS roared out of the gate in the second, going on a 20-9 run to open up a 14-point lead with 12:52 left.  The Boxers, slowly but surely, whittled away at the lead, bringing it to within one on Van Domelen's jumper with 23 seconds left.  A foul and a made free throw by Jeremy Cross put the Loggers back up two with only seconds left.  Gram attempted to win it with a three-pointer that missed with three seconds left, but Kawazoe picked up the rebound and hit a short jumper at the horn to force the extra period.

Pacific will look for their first NWC victory Tuesday night, traveling to George Fox for an 8:00 p.m. matchup at the Wheeler Sports Center.

Pacific Lutheran 76, at George Fox 67

Newberg, Ore. -- Jonathan Anderson, a transfer from North Idaho Junior College playing in only his third game since becoming eligible after Christmas, poured in 24 points, leading the Pacific Lutheran University Lutes past the George Fox University Bruins 76-67 in Northwest Conference men’s basketball Saturday night at Miller Gym in the Wheeler Sports Center.

The Bruins and Lutes exchanged leads four times in the first six minutes of the game, George Fox taking its final lead at 11-10 with 13:55 left in the half on a jumper by Mark Gayman.  PLU then ran off 9 unanswered points to take a 19-11 lead on an Anderson layup at the 9:32 mark, and the Lutes never trailed again.  It was 32-25 PLU at the half, and the Lutes maintained a lead between 7 and 16 points the rest of the way.

George Fox entered the game with all five of its starters averaging in double figures, and they all did it again, combining for 64 of the Bruins’ 67 points.  Scott Szalay and Ben Melvin had 15 each, Aaron Schmick scored 14, and Gayman and Bryan Wadlow had 10 apiece.  Gayman grabbed 8 rebounds as the Bruins maintained a slight edge on the boards, 37-36, and Schmick had 3 assists.

Anderson, the game’s high scorer, got help from Drew Cardwell with 18 points.  Michael Jacobs came off the bench to pull down a team-high 8 rebounds, and Hazen Hyland passed out 9 assists.

George Fox dipped to 3-7 overall and 0-2 in the conference, while Pacific Lutheran climbed to 4-7 overall and 1-1 in the league.

The Bruins are back in conference action Tuesday (Jan. 13), hosting Pacific University.  The Lutes are off until Friday (Jan. 16) when they will host Whitworth College.  Both men’s games are at 8:00 p.m., following women’s games at 6:00 p.m.
