George Fox 78, Northwest 68
Tacoma, Wash. – (From Nick Dawson, PLU SID) The George Fox women's basketball team held on to a 78-68 victory over the Northwest College Eagles in the first game on the second day of the PLU Parkland Chevrolet Classic. The Bruins had a 72-49 lead with seven minutes remaining, before Northwest College went on a 19-4 run to pull within eight at 76-68 with a minute remaining.
Northwest College's 17-16 lead ten minutes in the game was their last. Three straight three-pointers and a two-pointer by George Fox gave them a 27-17 lead they would not relinquish. Bruin guard Amy Fitch, forward Emily Ruggles and guard Liz Clark scored the three-pointers, while Clark added the layup to finish off the 11-0 run.
Forward Heather Doud and center Darby Cave led George Fox in scoring with 18 points each. Guard Becky Thompson had 12.
Guard Kathy Lockard lead four Eagles in double scoring with 17. Center Sarah Brick had 14, center Moriah Hover had 13, and guard Kim Haley had 12. Brick led Northwest College in rebounds with 11.
George Fox improves to 5-0, while the Eagles fall to 2-7.
George Fox begins Northwest Conference play hosting Pacific 7:30 p.m. Monday. Northwest College hosts Seattle University at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday.
Pacific Lutheran 60, Western Baptist 48
Tacoma, Wash. – (From Nick Dawson, PLU SID) Forward Jessica Iserman grabbed a school-record 23 rebounds in leading the Pacific Lutheran Lutes (4-1) to a 60-48 victory over visiting Western Baptist (4-5). The game was the final women's game in the PLU Parkland Chevrolet Classic.
Iserman also scored 16 points and was named tournament MVP. In two tournament games, Iserman scored 36 points and grabbed 30 rebounds. Iserman broke Tara Millet's school record of 21 rebounds against Seattle University on Feb. 7, 1998. Iserman's previous high of 19 boards occurred last season at Whitworth.
Lute guard Becky Franza was also named to the all-tournament team as she also scored 16 points.
The entire game was a series of runs. The Lutes jumped out to a 23-6 lead before the Warriors went on an 18-7 burst to cut the lead to 32-24. After an 8-2 Lute run, Western Baptist went on a 18-2 spurt to take a 44-42 lead with 13:12 remaining. PLU then scored 16 of the game's final 20 points.
Iserman scored eight of her points in PLU's opening 23-6 run.
Warrior guard Lindsy Hinkle scored 12 of her 14 points in Western Baptist's ensuing 18-7 run. Western Baptist guard Chelsey Ward scored all eight of her points in the 18-2 run that gave the Warriors their first and only lead.
An over-and-back violation by Western Baptist with the score 48-46 Lutes was the ignition behind PLU's last rally.
Guard Jamie Keatts also scored in double figures for the Lutes with 13. Western Baptist guard Tara Schmidgall scored 11 points for the Warriors.
The Lutes out-rebounded the Warriors 45-31.
The Lutes host Cascade 7 p.m. Tuesday. Western Baptist's next game is at home at 5:15 p.m. Tuesday against Lewis & Clark.
At Whitman 42, Cascade 40
Walla Walla, Wash. – (From Dave Holden, Whitman SID) With senior point guard Sunny Gulberg making big plays at both ends of the floor in the closing seconds, the Whitman women's basketball team squeaked past Cascade College 42-40 Friday night in Sherwood Center.
The victory squared Whitman's record at 2-2. Cascade fell to 1-9 on the season.
With the score knotted at 39-39, Gulberg swiped a Cascade inbounds pass with 33 seconds left on the clock to key a Whitman fastbreak. Gulberg took a pass at the other end of the floor and scored on a baseline drive while being fouled. She missed the free throw, but the Missionaries held the lead for good at 41-39 with 26.2 seconds remaining.
Cascade's Becci Randall made one of two charity tosses at the 15.1 mark to pull the Thunderbirds to within 41-40. Gulberg completed the scoring by canning one of two free throws with seconds left.
Gulberg, who finished with 13 points, shared high-point honors with Randall, who also snared 11 rebounds for Cascade.
Whitman's Kim Evanger added eight points, eight rebounds and three steals. Darin Reynaud chipped in with seven points and six boards, while Ashley Wright combined six rebounds and six steals with four points. Lindsey Gehrig, a freshman, hit Whitman's only 3-pointers of the night for six points.
Cascade's Imani Mohammed scored 11 points for the Thunderbirds.
Whitman jumped in front 19-10 midway through the first half, but Cascade rallied to close the gap to 22-20 at the break.
The Thunderbirds evened the score at 26-all early in the second half. Whitman pulled away to lead 38-30 with 5:12 remaining, only to see Cascade claw back to take a 39-38 lead with two minutes left.
Whitman's Evanger hit a free throw with 1:45 left on the clock to knot the score and set the stage for Gulberg's closing heroics.

Portland, Ore. – (From Tom Galbraith, L&C SID) Lewis & Clark and Willamette completed a Northwest Conference sweep Saturday in the Bon Appetit Women?s Basketball Classic, held at the Pamplin Sports Center. Willamette posted a 59-52 win over Notre Dame (Md.), while the Pioneers cruised 86-43 over Lesley (Mass.).
The Bearcats broke open a tight game in the last 8:33 of their win over Notre Dame with a 13-6 run to close the game. Rosie Contri led Willamette with 11 points, 13 rebounds, and four assists. Kasey Sorenson added 10 points and seven caroms. Karen Burley and Amanda Poppleton each scored 11 points for the Gators. Gabrielle Ferrell notched a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds.
Lewis & Clark opened up a 19-2 lead in the first five minutes of game two, and never looked back. Brynn Henkel led five Pioneers in double figues with 27 points. Kim McBride added 15, Lindsay Sweetland 13, and Lindsay Tarr and Deidra Wilson 10 each. Henkel also grabbed eight rebounds, seven steals, and five assists.
Melisa Toth led the Lynx with 17 points. Jamie Bean had 11.
Whitworth 83, at Concordia 80
Portland, Ore.—Chrissy Oneal scored 22 points to lead visiting Whitworth College to a 83-80 win over Concordia University in a non-conference women’s basketball game on Saturday night.
The Pirates built a 17-point halftime lead, 44-27, and held on for the win over the Lady Cavaliers, who were ranked 20th in the initial NAIA Division II poll.
Erica Ewart added 17 points and Jaime Dreewes finished with a game-high 11 rebounds for the Pirates. Courtney Bridges scored 19 points for Concordia.
The Pirates, who improved to 4-1 overall, will play at Gonzaga University on Thursday.
