2002 NWC Football Student-Athletes of the Week
Northwest Conference Football Players of the Week
Nov. 17
Offensive Player of the Week: Aaron Binger
(PLU, Jr., RB, North Bend, Wash.) carried 16 times for 171 yards
and scored three touchdowns. He also caught a pass for eight
yards.
Honorable Mention: David Russell (Linfield, RB) rushed 43 times for
150 yards and scored four touchdowns; Scott Biglin (Whitworth, QB)
completed 17 of 25 passes for 227 yards with three touchdowns and
two interceptions; Brett Meyer (Willamette, WR) caught six passes
for 154 yards and a touchdown.
Defensive Player of the Week: Aaron Sedler
(Whitworth, Fr., LB, Spokane, Wash.) recorded ten tackles, forced a
fumble and returned an interception 32 yards for a touchdown in
Whitworth's win.
Honorable Mention: Phil Marr (Linfield, DB) had nine tackles and
two interceptions in the Wildcats' win; Joey Mertlich (PLU, LB)
totaled eight tackles, including one for loss; Chris Stokes
(L&C, LB) had 13 tackles, including two sacks totaling eight
yards, in the Pioneers' loss.
Nov. 10
Offensive Player of the Week: David Russell
(Linfield, Sr., RB, Burnt Woods, Ore.) set a pair of Wildcat school
records when he carried 56 times for 234 yards. He also scored four
times in a win over Whitworth.
Honorable Mention: Drew Ecklund (Willamette, RB) carried 13 times
for 134 yards and caught two passes for 57 yards and a touchdown;
Kyle Brown (PLU, WR) caught 7 passes for 155 yards and a touchdown.
Defensive Player of the Week: Eric Hillison
(Linfield, So., CB, Beaverton, Ore.) made two interceptions and two
tackles to lead the Wildcat effort that held Whitworth to 56 total
yards and three first downs.
Honorable Mention: John McDowell (Willamette, LB) made seven
tackles (six solo), including an 8-yard sack, and intercepted a
pass; Aaron Sedler (Whitworth, LB) led the Pirates with 18 tackles.
Nov. 3
Offensive Player of the Week: Greg Reed
(Willamette, Jr., Fl, Suisun City, Calif.) rushed 14 times for 173
yards to key the Bearcats' win at PLU.
Honorable Mention: Scott Biglin completed 28 of 42 passes for 284
yards with four touchdowns and one interception, while rushing for
31 yards on eight carries; Tyler Matthews (Linfield, QB) completed
15 of 21 passes for 192 yards and one touchdown; Andy Carlson (UPS,
QB) rushed 32 times for 125 yards and completed 8 of 13 passes for
101 yards, while scoring twice.
Defensive Player of the Week: Nate Matlock
(Willamette, So., DE, Boise, Idaho) recorded eight tackles (seven
solo), including one sack of ten yards, while forcing a fumble and
recovering a fumble.
Honorable Mention: Kelley Bertrand (Linfield, DE) made four
tackles, including one sack, to lead the shutout of L&C; Jon
Hook (Whitworth, LB) had nine tackles (five solo), including two
for losses of five yards, and one pass deflection; John Rowbotham
(PLU, DB) made 15 tackles (10 solo) in the loss to Willamette;
Chris Stokes (L&C, LB) made 13 tackles, including 1.5 for loss
of 8 yards.
Oct. 27
Offensive Player of the Week: David Russell
(Linfield, Sr., RB, Burnt Woods, Ore.) rushed 14 times for 155
yards and three touchdowns while catching two passes for 32 yards
and another score, all in only one half of play.
Honorable Mention: Trent Thompson (L&C, QB) ran for 101 yards
and passed for 269 while completing 25 of 42 passes with two
touchdowns and one interception in the loss to PLU; Aaron Binger
(PLU, RB) ran for 77 yards on 13 carries and caught three passes
for 126 yards, scoring twice; Scott Biglin (Whitworth, QB)
completed 14 of 21 passes for 181 yards and two touchdowns and ran
for 53 yards and another score on six carries; Chad Mahoe (UPS, RB)
ran for 116 yards on 22 carries while scoring once.
Defensive Player of the Week: John Rowbotham
(PLU, Sr., DB, Salt Lake City, Utah) was in on 11 tackles (four
solos) and had four tackles for losses totaling nine yards.
Honorable Mention: Dusty Kinley (Whitworth, LB) made 11 tackles
(seven solo), including three for losses of four yards; Andrew
Bohaty (L&C, DB) totaled nine tackles (five solo), including
two for losses of four yards, and returned an interception 31
yards; Ryan Boatsman (Linfield, LB) returned an interception 39
yards for a touchdown and made four tackles, including a nine-yard
sack.
Oct. 20
Offensive Player of the Week: Drew Ecklund
(Willamette, Sr., RB, San Luis Obispo, Calif.) rushed 10 times for
136 yards and touchdowns of 15, 31 and 38 yards. He also caught two
passes for 56 yards and one touchdown (43 yards). With a 24-yard
kick off return, he had 216 all-purpose yards.
Honorable Mention: Trent Thompson (L&C, QB) completed 17 of 27
passes for 201 yards and four touchdowns (with three interceptions)
and ran for another score; Tyler Matthews (Linfield, QB) completed
19 of 29 passes for 238 yards and two touchdowns with one
interception; Mike Ramirez (PLU, RB) ran for 102 yards on 14
attempts.
Defensive Player of the Week: Casey Carlson
(PLU, Jr., LB, Woodinville, Wash.) led the Lute defense by
recording five tackles, including two sacks for 15 yards, as PLU
held Whitworth to 199 total yards of offense.
Honorable Mention: Ike Ellis (Linfield, S) made five tackles and
intercepted two passes; Daniel Jones (Whitworth, DE) has 12 tackles
(seven solo) and 2.5 sacks for 12 yards; Drew Sparn (UPS) had 17
tackles (12 solo) to lead the Loggers; Logan Lord (Willamette, LB)
led the Bearcats with nine tackles (seven unassisted).
Oct. 13
Offensive Player of the Week: Scott Biglin
(Whitworth, Sr., QB, Pasco, Wash.) completed 19 of 27 passes for
306 yards with one interception. He threw touchdown passes of 15
and 30 yards in Whitworth's win over Willamette.
Honorable Mention: Kyle Brown (PLU, WR) caught 11 passes for 216
yards and a touchdown; David Russell (Linfield, RB) carried eight
times for 120 yards and a touchdown; Mickey Rosendahl (L&C, RB)
carried 26 times for 91 yards and four touchdowns, while catching
seven passes for 45 yards; Greg Reed (Willamette, Fl) carried 20
times for 156 yards and a touchdown.
Defensive Player of the Week: Ryan Boatsman
(Linfield, Jr., LB, Kelso, Wash.) led the Wildcats' shutout of UPS
with eight tackles (three solo) and a forced fumble.
Honorable Mention: Jon Hook (Whitworth, LB) had 10 tackles (four
solo), including one for loss, and returned an interception 77
yards for a clinching touchdown; Joey Mertlich (PLU, LB) had 11
tackles, including a sack for eight yards and two other tackles for
loss (-3); Andrew Bohaty (L&C) had 11 tackles (7 solo).
Oct. 6
Offensive Player of the Week: Thomas Ford
(Linfield, So., RB, Seattle, Wash.) ran for 147 yards on 22 carries
(both career highs) and scored a touchdown to lead the Wildcats
past PLU. He also returned four kickoffs for 77 yards.
Honorable Mention: Greg Reed (Willamette, Fl) rushed eight times
for 131 yards and three touchdowns at Chapman; Mickey Rosendahl
(L&C) ran 13 times for 71 yards and two touchdowns and caught
five passes for 82 yards and another score.
Defensive Player of the Week: Omar Young
(Willamette, So., DB, Emeryville, Calif.) had nine tackles (five
unassisted), including one for loss of two yards, and a pass break
up in the win at Chapman.
Honorable Mention: Ray Lions (Linfield, DB) made seven tackles
(four solo) and intercepted a pass at the one yard line; Chris
Smith (L&C) had seven tackles and three pass deflections.
Sept. 29
Offensive Player of the Week: Drew Ecklund
(Willamette, Sr., RB, San Luis Obispo, Calif.) ran for 174 yards on
19 carries and scored two touchdowns to lead the Bearcats past
visiting Menlo.
Honorable Mention: Matt Jackson (L&C, TE) caught four passes
for 92 yards and three touchdowns; Scott Biglin (Whitworth, QB)
completed 30 of 47 passes for 302 yards and two touchdowns; Chad
Mahoe (UPS, RB) ran for 157 yards on 29 carries.
Defensive Player of the Week: Ken Halpin
(Willamette, Jr., LB, Medford, Ore.) finished with 8.5 total
tackles, including 2.5 for losses of six yards, and returned an
interception 34 yards for a touchdown.
Honorable Mention: David Warth (L&C) totaled 10 tackles, four
solo, and recorded two tackles for losses of two yards.
Sept. 22
Offensive Player of the Week: Bill Condon
(Whitworth, Jr., RB, Seattle, Wash.) led the Pirates past Menlo by
rushing for 163 yards (18 carries) and scoring on runs of 29 and 64
yards.
Honorable Mention: David Russell (Linfield, RB) ran for 97 yards on
18 carries and scored three TD's including the OT game-winner; Kyle
Brown (PLU, WR) caught six passes for 78 yards and two TDs; Greg
Reed (Willamette, FL) carried 18 times for 97 yards and three
scores; Trent Thompson (L&C, QB) had 450 yards of total
offense, passing for 329 (18-43-1) and three scores and rushing for
120 yards on 20 carries.
Defensive Player of the Week: Casey Carlson
(PLU, Jr., LB, Woodinville, Wash.) recorded seven tackles,
including 2.5 sacks (-18 yards) and two other tackles for loss
(-7), and returned a fumble 45 yards for a touchdown.
Honorable Mention: Ray Lions (Linfield, DB) recorded 15 tackles
(six solo), including two for loss (-2) and a two-yard sack; Daniel
Jones (Whitworth, DL) had four tackles, including two sacks (-11)
and another TFL (-2) and forced two fumbles; Chris Stokes (L&C)
had eight tackles, including three for loss (-7) and an
interception.
Sept. 15
Offensive Player of the Week: David Russell
(Linfield, Sr., RB, Burnt River, Ore.) rushed for a career high 147
yards and one touchdown in Linfield's 59-21 win at Redlands,
averaging 13.4 yards per carry and catching a pass for 16
yards.
Honorable Mention: Aaron Binger (PLU, RB) picked up 203 all-purpose
yards (143 rushing, 60 receiving) and scored twice in the loss to
APU; Bill Condon (Whitworth, RB) ran for 98 yards and scored twice
in Whitworth's win.
Defensive Player of the Week: Jon Hook
(Whitworth, So., LB, Spokane, Wash.) recorded five tackles (four
solo), including two for loss of three yards, and made a TD-saving
interception.
Honorable Mention: Ray Lions (Linfield, DB) made eight tackles,
intercepted a pass and broke up another; Chris Roden (PLU, DE) made
six tackles, including two sacks (-17 yards) and another for loss
of one.
