2008 NWC Football Student-Athletes of the Week
Nov. 17
Offense - Travis Masters (Linfield,
Sr./WR/RB Elk Grove, Calif./Elk Grove) totaled 273
all-purpose yards versus PLU, the third-highest single-game total
in Linfield history. He averaged 16.9 yards per carry, rushing for
a season-high 135 yards, caught five passes for 79 yards, including
a touchdown, and also returned a kickoff 59 yards.
Honorable Mention - Grant Leslie (Willamette, Sr.), Darrell Stewart
(Puget Sound, Sr.).
FDefense - Marcus Ford (Willamette,
Sr./DE Marina, Calif./Seaside/Monterey Peninsula
College) led Willamette's defensive pressure, especially
in the second half, when Willamette limited Menlo to 78 total
yards. He achieved 7 tackles overall. He made 4.5 tackles for
losses totaling of 36 yards, including 3.5 sacks for 28 yards lost.
Willamette's defense held the Oaks to just three points during the
game.
Honorable Mention -Dean Kongslie (Linfield, Sr.)
Special Teams - Doug Rickabaugh (Pacific Lutheran, Sr./P Graham, Wash./Cascade Christian) had three punts inside the 20-yard line on Saturday in his last game as a Lute. Rickabaugh also booted a 61 yard punt, his longest of the day.
Nov. 10
Offense - Grant Leslie (Willamette,
Sr./QB Bainbridge Island, Wash./Bainbridge)
completed 7 of 13 passes for a career-high 285 yards and five
touchdowns. His TDs went for 30, 93, 65, 31 and 39 yards. His
93-yard touchdown pass to Scott Schoettgen was just one yard short
of the Willamette record. Leslie's five TD passes were one short of
the school record for TD passes in a single game. He averaged 40.7
yards per completion.
Honorable Mention - Kavin Williams (Puget Sound, Jr.), Cole
Franklin (Linfield, So.), Milton Nelson (Whitworth, Jr.), Drew
Griffin (Pacific Lutheran, Jr.).
Defense - Jack Bevins (Willamette, Sr./ILB Park
City, Utah/Park City) led Willamette with 18 tackles in
the Bearcats' victory over Puget Sound. He had one tackle for a
loss and also forced a fumble.
Honorable Mention - Paul Partlow (Linfield, Jr.), Eric Borton
(Puget Sound, Sr.).
Special Teams - Drew Griffin (Pacific
Lutheran, Jr./FS Steilacoom, Wash./Western
Washington) blocked a field goal attempt, the return of
which led to a short-field PLU touchdown. In addition, Griffin set
up the Lutes with good field position on kickoff returns throughout
the game.
Honorable Mention - Lukkes Gilgan (Willamette, Jr.)
Nov. 3
Offense - Adam Anderson (Whitworth, Jr./RB Elk,
Wash./Riverside/Univ. of Idaho) led Whitworth to a come-from-behind
win at PLU with 217 yards rushing. His six touchdown total is the
second highest in Northwest Small College history, behind Rory Lee
of UPS (seven vs. Menlo in 2006). Anderson set Whitworth records
for touchdowns and points (36) in a game. His 22 touchdowns this
season and 134 total points are also single?]season Whitworth
records. He has also broken the school record for allpurpose yards
in a season with 1,977 (the old record was 1,911 set in 1990 by
Mark Linden).
Honorable Mention -Kavin Williams (Puget Sound, Jr.), Greg Ford
(Linfield, So.).
Defense - Taylor Summers (Linfield, Sr./DE
Sammamish, Wash./Skyline) added to his NWC-leading sacks total with
two sacks and one other tackle for loss. He also recovered a
fumble.
Honorable Mention -Layton Brown (Whitworth, So.), Michael Oates
(Puget Sound, Jr.).
Oct. 27
Offense - Deon Horne (Willamette, Jr./Tailback
Issaquah, Wash./Liberty) carried the ball 16 times for 122 yards
and 3 touchdowns in Willamette's win at Linfield. He scored twice
in the first quarter on runs of 30 and 11 yards. Horne also scored
on a 50-yard run with 6:12 left in the game to give Willamette a
45-28 lead. Horne has rushed for 604 yards and eight touchdowns
this season.
Honorable Mention - Adam Anderson (Whitworth, Jr.), Michael Byrne
(Pacific Lutheran, Sr.).
Defense - Andy Sturza (Pacific Lutheran,
Jr./Invert Kingston, Wash./North Kitsap) was the leading tackler
for a PLU defense that limited Puget Sound to 200 yards of total
offense. Sturza racked up 14 total tackles, including two tackles
for losses and a sack.
Honorable Mention - Layton Brown (Whitworth, So.), Arlin Taylor
(Willamette, So.), Alverno Middleton (Puget Sound, Sr.).
Special Teams - Grant Piros (Willamette,
Sr./Free Safety Newberg, Ore./Newberg) scored the game's first
touchdown on a 23-yard return of a blocked punt in a win against
Linfield this weekend. Piros also recovered the ball at the
Linfield 11-yard line after a Linfield high snap. Willamette scored
on the next play. Piros rounded off his day with an assisted tackle
on a kickoff return and one assisted tackle on defense.
Honorable Mention - Doug Rickabaugh (Pacific Lutheran, Sr.).
Oct. 20
Offense - Adam Anderson (Whitworth, Jr./RB Elk,
Wash./Riverside/Univ. of Idaho) add to his conference leading
rushing yards, all-purpose yards and scoring with a career high 214
rushing yards (8.2 yards per carry). Anderson had four rushing
touchdowns, which tied a school record.
Honorable Mention - Merben Woo (Willamette, Sr.)
Defense - Marcus Ford (Willamette, Sr./DE
Marina, Calif./Seaside/Monterey Peninsula College) tied for
Willamette's team lead in tackles against Pacific Lutheran. He
earned 6 total tackles, including 1.5 tackles for losses and one
quarterback sack. Four of his six tackles were on plays that gained
1 yard or less.
Honorable Mention - Brandon Martin (Whitworth, Jr.), Neal Chalmers
(Pacific Lutheran, Sr.).
Special Teams - Scott Birkhofer (Linfield,
Sr./K Boring, Ore./Portland Christian) broke his own school record
for longest field goal with a 56-yard make, eclipsing his mark of
54 set earlier this season. He also made a 52-yarder in a win for
Linfield over Lewis & Clark.
Honorable Mention - Harmon Bruno (Willamette, Fr.), Doug Rickabaugh
(Pacific Lutheran, Sr.).
Oct. 13
Offense - Dino Arancibia (Menlo, Sr./WR
Hayward, Calif./Laney College) racked up eight receptions for 152
yards and a 21-yard touchdown catch in Menlo's Homecoming win
against Puget Sound.
Honorable Mention - Reggie Ford (Linfield, Sr.).
Defense - Steven Turner (Menlo, Jr./DB Lathrop,
Calif./Chabot College) had a six total tackles and picked up a
fumble and rumbled 40 yards to put Menlo ahead 28-21 just over a
minute into the fourth quarter in a win over Puget Sound on Menlo's
Homecoming weekend.
Honorable Mention - Alex Tkachuk (Linfield, Jr.), Andrew Ross
(Willamette, Jr.), Giustin Jenkins (Pacific Lutheran, Jr.), Dane
Gilbertson (Whitworth, So.), Eric Borton (Puget Sound, Sr.).
Special Teams - Zack Clow (Whitworth, So./P
Blanchard, Idaho/Priest River) averaged 39.4 yards per punt and put
two inside the 20 yard line for the Pirates this weekend. Long punt
of the day was 56 yards.
Honorable Mention - P.J. Sequeira (Linfield, So.), Ryan Kostecka
(Lewis & Clark, So.), Colin Higgins (Menlo, Fr.), Jose Green
(Willamette, So.).
Oct. 6
Offense - Greg Ford (Pacific Lutheran, So./WR
Steilacoom, Wash./Steilacoom) set two new PLU single-game pass
receiving records on Saturday - most TD receptions in a game with 5
(former record 4) and most receiving yards with 272 (former record
224). Pacific Lutheran has scored a total of seven touchdowns this
season and Greg has scored six of them via pass reception. He also
caught a twopoint conversion pass.
Honorable Mention - Deon Horne (Willamette, Jr.), Adam Anderson
(Whitworth, Jr.).
Defense - Tommy Grove (Willamette, Sr./IL
Moccasin, Calif./Sonora/Butte College) recorded nine tackles,
including six solo tackles, in Willamette's 32-23 win at Whitworth.
He also intercepted a pass and returned it 30 yards to the
Whitworth 20-yard line with 12:24 remaining in the game and the
score tied 17-17. His interception set up the go-ahead score five
plays later.
Honorable Mention - Taylor Summers (Linfield, Sr.), Giustin Jenkins
(Pacific Lutheran, Jr.), Shawn Kelly
(Lewis & Clark, So.), Dane Gilbertson (Whitworth, So.).
Special Teams - Scott Birkhofer (Linfield,
Sr./K Boring, Ore./Portland Christian) accounted for all of
Linfield's points in a 9-0 win over Menlo. He broke his own school
record for longest field goal with a 54-yarder in the first
quarter.
Honorable Mention -Mitchell Rowan (Willamette, Fr.).
Sept. 29
Offense - Adam Anderson (Whitworth, Jr./RB Elk,
Wash./Riverside/University of Idaho) set a school record with 324
all-purpose yards. He led Whitworth to a come-from-behind 41-35 win
at previously unbeaten Chapman. His four total touchdowns also tied
a school record. His touchdown reception in the fourth quarter was
a diving/sliding catch on fourth and goal from the eight yard
line.
Honorable Mention - Angel Molina (Menlo, So.), Cole Franklin
(Linfield, So.), Deon Horne (Willamette, Jr.).
Defense - Taylor Summers (Linfield, Sr./DE
Sammamish, Wash./Skyline) was a force on defense, sacking the
Southern Oregon University QB twice, forcing a fumble, deflecting a
pass and causing a quarterback hurry as Linfield held the
Raiders
Honorable Mention -Marcus Ford (Willamette, Sr.), Brandon Martin
(Whitworth, Jr.), Kael Johnson (Menlo, Sr.),
Special Teams - Mitchell Rowan (Willamette,
Fr./PK/P Cotati, Calif./Rancho Cotate) averaged 44.6 yards on 5
punts, while placing four of the punts inside the 20-yard line. He
also made 6 of 6 extra point attempts.
Honorable Mention -Robbie Fritts (Menlo, Sr.).
Sept. 22
Offense - Darrell Stewart (Puget Sound, Sr./WR
Long Beach, Calif./Loyola) had a career high seven receptions for
182 yards and two touchdowns in a three overtime win for Puget
Sound over Claremont-M-S.
Honorable Mention - Merben Woo (Willamette, Sr.), Shawn Evans
(Lewis & Clark, So. ).
Defense - Brian Walker (Puget Sound, Sr./DL
Keizer, Ore./McNary) accumulated three tackles for loss, one sack,
forced a fumble and blocked two game-winning field goal attempts in
Saturday's game against Claremont-M-S.
Honorable Mentions - Jeff Kahler (Willamette, So.), Neal Chalmers
(Pacific Lutheran, Sr.)
Special Teams - Jose Green (Willamette,
So./Tailback Downey, Calif/Warren) returned two punts, including a
46-yarder for a touchdown that gave Willamette a 24-23 lead
(following the extra point) with 12:36 left in the fourth quarter
against Southern Oregon. Green ran 12 yards upfield to get to the
punt near the sideline, caught it and immediately eluded a tackler.
He avoided the sideline for his next couple of steps, and went to
the end zone behind a couple of blocks from his teammates. He also
returned a kickoff for 13 yards.

Sept. 15
Offense - Kavin Williams (Puget Sound, Jr./QB
Ocean Shores, Wash./North Beach) had an outstanding game in the
Loggers' season-opener, including 18 rushes for 134 yards and two
rushing touchdowns and 149 passing yards. He erased any doubt that
may have existed after his season-ending shoulder injury last
year.
Honorable Mention - Adam Anderson (Whitworth, Jr.), Merben Woo
(Willamette, Sr.), Ryan Kostecka
(Lewis & Clark, So.).
Defense - Tyler McCann (Linfield, Sr./DB
Keizer, Ore./McNary) led Linfield with a careerhigh
12 tackles.
Honorable Mentions - Phillip Thomas (Puget Sound, Jr.), Haden
Geinger (Pacific Lutheran, Sr.), Brandon Martin (Whitworth, Jr.),
Tommy Grove (Willamette, Sr.).
Special Teams - Wyatt Evenson (Puget Sound,
Fr./K/P Spokane, Wash./Shadle Park) kicked the Loggers' first field
goals since the second quarter of a 48-7 win over Menlo on Nov. 4,
2006, a streak of 42 quarters without a field goal.
Honorable Mentions - Jose Green (Willamette, So.), Scott Birkhofer
