2008 NWC Men's Soccer Student-Athletes of the Week
Nov. 10
Offense - Derek Karamatic
(Pacific Lutheran, Sr./F Gig Harbor, Wash./Gig
Harbor) played all 90 minutes this weekend and finished
the season with six goals in his last three games by scoring his
first PLU career hat trick against Linfield.
Honorable Mention - Caleb Barnhill (Whitworth, Sr.), Stephen
Phillips (Whitman, Sr.), Kurtis Wong (Linfield, Jr.), Kyle Benson
(Puget Sound, So.).
Defense - Bryan Olson (Whitworth,
Jr./D Missoula, Mont./Sentinel) is Whitworth's
leader in minutes played and led the Pirates' defensive effort over
the weekend. At center back, he helped the Pirates limit the
two opponents to only three shots on-goal. Whitworth's
keepers only had to make three saves this weekend to post the two
shutouts.
Honorable Mention - Brett Axelrod (Whitman, Sr.), Ben Coffey (Puget
Sound, So.), Danny Kamma (George Fox, Fr.), Daniel Mangum (Pacific
Lutheran, So.).
Nov. 3
Offense - Danny Williams (Pacific, Sr./M
Eugene, Ore./Sheldon/Concordia Univ.) scored the opening goal in a
win over UPS and provided the game-winner against Willamette. In
both games, he saw additional opportunities come off the crossbar.
His nine goals on the season bring him to 32 goals, two short of
the Pacific all-time record. In addition, his 23 points gibes him
73 for his career, two short of the Pacific all-time record.
Honorable Mention - Derek Karamatic (Pacific Lutheran, Sr.), Cole
Peterson (Puget Sound, Jr.).
Defense - Andrew Stevermer (Pacific, So./GK
Gillette, Wyo./Campbell County) posted his sixth shutout of the
season in the game against Willamette. Stevermer now owns a 0.78
goals against average, putting him on pace to set a new Pacific
single season record. The goal against UPS was just the second
given up by Stevermer in the last five matches.
Honorable Mention - Joe Johnson (Whitman, Sr.), Jeff Srock
(Whitworth, Jr.), Daniel Mangum (Pacific Lutheran, So.), Mark
Bennett (Willamette, Jr.), Greg Saetrum (Puget Sound, Jr.).
Oct. 27
Offense - Eddy Prugh (Whitworth, Fr./F Bozeman,
Mont./Bozeman) scored Whitworth's only goal in a tie at Pacific
Lutheran, then scored the eventual match-winner in an important
victory at Puget Sound to keep his team in first place in the
conference standings.
Honorable Mention - Ivan Gutierrez (Willamette, Sr.), Cole Peterson
(Puget Sound, Jr.).
Defense - Brett Axelrod (Whitman, Sr./GK Union,
N.J./Union) gave up just one goal in two games and posted his
NWC-leading 7th shutout on Sunday at PLU to keep Whitman in second
place, just two points behind Whitworth. Axelrod also leads the NWC
in minutes played (1555.57), goals against average (0.46), and save
percentage (.895).
Honorable Mention -Mark Bennett (Willamette, Jr.).
Oct. 20
Offense - Caleb Barnhill (Whitworth, Sr./F
Sultan, Wash./Sultan) had two goals this weekend in a pair of wins
over Willamette and Linfield. Barnhill led Whitworth's comeback win
over Linfield with the tying goal in the 67th minute, then the
assist on the winner with 1:37 to play in the match. He leads the
NWC in goals scored with 10.
Honorable Mention - Taylor Hyde (Puget Sound, Sr.), Marc Nabelek
(Whitman, Sr.), Sean Daughtry (George Fox, So.), Kizamu Tsutakawa
(Pacific, So.), Ivan Gutierrez (Willamette, Sr.).
Defense - Andrew Stevermer (Pacific, So./GK
Gillette, Wyo./Campbell County) finished with his fourth and fifth
shutouts of the season, with six saves this weekend. Stevermer
lowered his goals against average to 0.80 on the season. He has not
allowed a goal in the last 248 minutes.
Honorable Mention - Jake Maguire (George Fox, Jr.).
Oct. 13
Offense - Danny Williams (Pacific, Sr./M
Eugene, Ore./Sheldon/Concordia Univ.) scored the first goal of
Pacific's 3-1 victory over Whitworth in just 1 minute, 3 seconds,
added the insurance goal with just a minute left and assisted on
the game-winning goal. His two goals and five points move him into
second on both Pacific's all-time goal scoring and points list.
Honorable Mention - Jason Shon (Whitman, Sr.), Elly Bulega
(Whitworth, Jr.), Andy Hyres (Pacific Lutheran, Sr.), Brennan
Altringer (George Fox, Fr.), Kyle Johnson (Puget Sound, Sr.).
Defense - Derek MacLean (Pacific Lutheran,
Jr./D Seattle, Wash./Kennedy) had his third and fourth straight
shut outs this weekend with 23 total saves. MacLean also was one of
two players to clear a ball off the line in Pacific Lutheran's 1-0
win over Puget Sound.
Honorable Mention - Andrew Stevermer (Pacific, So.).
Oct. 6
Offense - John Brookover (Whitworth, Jr./MF
Boise, Idaho/Boise) scored the first goal of the match, then the
match winner in overtime in the game against Whitman. No team, much
less a single player, had scored more than one goal in a match
against the Missionaries this season.
Honorable Mention -Ricky Morales (Pacific Lutheran, Fr.), Brian
Story (George Fox, Jr.), Kevin Donato (Linfield, So.), Nick Forbes
(Willamette, Sr.)
Defense - Derek MacLean (Pacific Lutheran,
Jr./D Seattle, Wash./Kennedy) has become the anchor of the PLU back
line in place of graduated 2007 NWC Defensive POY Brian Lubeck. He
led the Lutes to a pair of shutout victories this week.
Honorable Mention - Mark Bennett (Willamette, Jr.)
Sept. 29
Offense - Michael Iacolucci (Pacific, So./F
Seattle, Wash./Nathan Hale) scored both the first goal and the
game-winner in Pacific's 3-2 overtime victory over Linfield. An
apparent third goal was waived off on an offside call. The goals
were his second and third of the season.
Honorable Mention - Erik Kaufman (Willamette, Fr.), Zach Semago
(Puget Sound, So.).
Defense - Greg Saetrum (Puget Sound, So./GK
Boise, Idaho/Timberline) pitched a pair of shutouts in goal for the
Loggers this week on arguably the toughest road trip in the
Northwest Conference.
Honorable Mention - Brett Axelrod (Whitman, Fr.), Jake Maguire
(George Fox, Jr.), Mark Bennett (Willamette, Jr.), Taylor Kane
(Pacific, Fr.).
Sept. 22
Offense - Stephen Phillips (Whitman, Sr./M/F
Sandy, Utah/Waterford School) helped Whitman complete its weekend
road split by sparking Whitman's second-half rally at Linfield. He
assisted on the goal that evened the game at 1-1 and then booted
the game-winner with just three seconds left in overtime.
Honorable Mention - Brenna Altringer (George Fox, Fr.), Caleb
Barnhill (Whitworth, Sr.), Erik Kaufman (Willamette, Fr.).
Defense - Daniel Mangum (Pacific Lutheran,
So./GK Bothell, Wash./Juanita) racked up 11 saves in a 0-0, two
overtime tie against Pacific.
Honorable Mention -Brian Sherpe (Whitworth, Fr.), Andrew Stevermer
(Pacific, So.), Connor Campbell (George Fox, So.).
Sept. 15
Offense - Danny Williams (Pacific, Sr./M
Eugene, Ore./Sheldon/Concordia Univ.) scored the game-winning goal
on a penalty kick in Sunday's match against Mary and assisted on
the game-winner in double overtime against College of Idaho. So
far, Danny has scored five goals in the Boxers' first six matches.
His five goals and 12 points currently lead the NWC. The five goals
gives Danny 28 for his Pacific career, placing him one behind Rusty
Sandusky for second on Pacific's all-time goals list.
Honorable Mention - Travis Isaacs (Linfeild, Jr.), Stephen Phillips
(Whitman, Sr.), John Prugh (Whitworth, Sr.), Kyle Story (George
Fox, Jr.).
Defense - Joe Locasio (Linfield, Jr. Salem,
Ore./Southridge) made 11 saves during 180 minutes of action and
posted a shutout versus Cal-State East Bay. Against
Claremont-Mudd-Scripps, he allowed one early goal but continued on
to make six solid saves on the day.
Honorable Mention -Jake Maguire (George Fox, Jr.), Andrew Stevermer
(Pacific, So.).
Sept. 8
Offensive - Kurtis Wong (Linfield, Jr., F; Lake Forest
Park, Wash./Shorecrest) tallied eight points, including
three goals and two assists, in a 7-0 rout of NW Christian, the
second highest point total in program history. It was also the
second-most goals ever scored in a Linfield soccer match.
Honorable Mention -Caleb Barnhill (Whitworth, Sr.), Daniel
Zaccagnini (Pacific Lutheran, So.), Kyle Benson (Puget Sound, So.),
Danny Williams (Pacific, Sr.), Erik Kaufman (Willamette, Fr.),
Keith Marshall (George Fox, Jr.).
Defensive - Brett Axelrod (Whitman, senior, goalkeeper;
Union NJ / Union HS) faced 26 shots, making nine saves,
while posting back-to-back double-overtime shutouts during the past
week, and recording his third straight 2OT shutout. He has given up
just one goal in four double-overtime games to start the
season.
Honorable Mention - Greg Saetrum (Puget Sound, So.), Jake Maguire
(George Fox, Jr.).
Sept. 1
Men's Soccer Offensive - Todd Wallenius (Whitman,
sophomore, forward; Oceanside CA/San Dieguito HS Academy)
booted Whitman's only goal in a 1-1 double-overtime tie with NAIA's
Westminster (14-5 last season) and scored the game's only goal in a
1-0 double-overtime victory over NCAA Div. II Dixie State. He
played a total of 172 minutes as one of Whitman's forwards.
Honorable Mention - Elly Bulega (Whitworth, Jr.), Jon Maroni
(George Fox, Jr.), Erik Kaufman (Willamette, Fr.).
Men's Soccer Defensive - Brett Axelrod (Whitman, senior,
goalkeeper; Union NJ / Union HS) made six saves against 23
shots against Westminster, preserving a 1-1 tie for Whitman with
three saves in the second overtime, one of which was a kick save
against a Westminster breakaway opportunity. He added three saves
against nine shots in shutting out NCAA DII Dixie State .
