2008-09 NWC Men's Tennis Student-Athletes of the Week

April 13

Andrew Murakami (Willamette, Sr. Wahiawa, Hawaii/Leilehua) went 2-0 in singles with wins over Pacific (6-3, 6-0) and Puget Sound (6-3. 6-3) at No. 2 and No. 1 singles respectively. He also went 2-0 in doubles (8-4 and 8-3) with Micah Mack. Murakami's efforts helped Willamette go 2-0 to finish the NWC regular season schedule at 9-7 and tied with Whitworth for fourth place.

April 6

Kyle Anderson (Linfield, Jr. Scottsdale, Ariz./University) went 2-0 in singles and 1-0 in doubles last week to help his team to an undefeated weekend. In #1 singles, Anderson posted matches of 6-1, 6-4 and 6-1, 3-6, 6-4 against Whitworth and Lewis & Clark respectively. His doubles win came against Whitworth, 8-6.

March 30

Justin Hayashi (Whitman, Sr. Kirkland, Wash./Lakeside School) kept his undefeated season alive with victories in four doubles matches, including two against nationally-ranking Chicago and DePauw. Hayashi and doubles partner Dan Wilson are now 15-0 on the season. Hayashi and Jasper Follows played doubles for the first time this week and won.

March 23

Chris Bailey (Whitman, So., Mercer Island, Wash. - Mercer Island) won three times in four tries at #1 singles, including a key match at Linfield. His only loss came against a regionally-ranked player from Colby (Maine). He also won four doubles matches.

Honorable Mention - Michael Manser (PLU, Jr., Boise, Idaho - Timberline); Walt James (Linfield, Fr., Eugene, Ore. - South Eugene); Cody Ferguson (Willamette, Fr., North Bend, Ore. - W. Oregon Univ.)

 

March 16

Michael Manser (Pacific Lutheran, Jr. Boise, Idaho/Univ. of Idaho) playing at No. 2, helped Pacific Lutheran defeat Linfield, 7-2  with a straight set singles win (6-4, 6-2) and a doubles point (8-4). Later on Saturday against George Fox, he moved up to the No. 1 spot in both singles and doubles and picked up two more wins (6-3, 6-4 and 8-5).

Honorable Mention - Nadeem Kassam (Whitman, Jr. Vancouver, B.C.), Spencer Hing (Pacific, Fr. Phoenix, Ariz.), Kellen Oetgen (Whitworth, Jr. Bellingham, Wash.), Matt Houser (Willamette, So. Vancouver, Wash.).

March 9

Etienne Moshevich (Whitman, So. Richmond, B.C./Hugh McRoberts Secondary) posted a convincing straight-set victory at No. 1 singles and contributed an 8-1 win at No. 2 doubles as 19th-ranked Whitman stayed undefeated in the NWC while handing Linfield its first conference loss. Moshevich is now 5-0 on the season at No. 1 singles and 4-0 in NWC doubles (two different partners).

Honorable Mention - Matt Houser (Willamette, So. Vancouver, Wash.), Scott Barnett (George Fox, Fr. Jefferson, Ore.)Ward Van Mens (Linfield, Fr. Goirle, The Netherlands), Micah Leo (Pacific, Fr. Hillsboro, Ore.).

March 2

Cody Ferguson (Willamette, Fr. North Bend, Ore./Western Oregon Univ.) went 2-0 in singles (6-4, 6-2 and 6-1, 6-2) and 2-0 in doubles (8-3, 8-4) during the week, helping Willamette defeat Pacific and Lewis & Clark. He won both of his singles matches in straight sets (one at #3, one at #2). He combined with Micah Mack to win #2 doubles against Pacific and #1 doubles against L&C.

Honorable Mention - Nick Ruess (Linfield, Sr. Portland, Ore.), Adriel Borshansky (Whitman, Fr. Ridgewood, N.J.), Eric Furuya (Pacific, Fr. Portland, Ore.), Scoter Sabel (Puget Sound, Jr. Sun Valley, Idaho).

Feb. 23

Michael Shelton (Whitworth, Jr. Burbank, Wash./CC of Spokane) led Whitworth to a 3-0 weekend by winning all six matches he played in No. 1 singles and doubles. Shelton recorded  a 6-4, 0-6, 6-1 singles win against George Fox, and in a double header against Pacific won  7-5, 6-3 and 6-3, 6-2.

Honorable Mention - Scott Sheldon (Pacific Lutheran, So. Edmonds, Wash.), Etienne Moshevich (Whitman, So. Richmond, B.C.), Andrew Murakami (Willamette, Sr. Wahiawa, Hawaii), Tal DeWitt (Linfield, So. Battle Ground, Wash.), Nhat Nguyen (Pacific, So. Salem, Ore.).

Feb. 16

Michael Okada (Pacific, So. Hilo, Hawaii/Waiakea) led the way for Pacific as the Boxers as they went 2-0 against Puget Sound and George Fox after going 2-15 during the 2008 season. Okada won his No. 1 singles matches 6-3, 6-1 and 6-2, 7-6 respectively and teamed up with Eric Furuya to clinch two No. 1 doubles wins, both 8-2.
