2004 NWC Softball Student-Athletes of the Week

April 25

NWC Hitter of the Week: Gretchen Ruecker (PLU, So., IF, Hillsboro, Ore.) hit .650 (13/20) led the Lutes to a 6-0 week with three doubles and two home runs. She drove in 17 runs and scored seven times.
Honorable Mention: Stephanie Morgan (Linfield, 1B) went 8/12 with three doubles, a home run, three RBI and three runs scored in four wins; Aubri Azzarito (Whitworth, 2B) was 6/9 with a home run, four RBI and a run scored in four games; Chelsea Logan (Pacific, C) went 4/9 with an RBI and a stolen base in four games.

NWC Pitcher of the Week: Jewel Koury (PLU, Sr., RHP, Tumwater, Wash.) threw three complete-game victories, including two shutouts, allowing one run (none earned) on 11 hits with 10 strikeouts and two walks in 17 innings.
Honorable Mention: Jo Sonnett (Whitworth, RHP) went 2-1, allowing one run on 13 hits while striking out 14 and walking one in 20.2 innings; Michelle Morris (Linfield, RHP) went 2-0, including a six-inning no-hitter, allowing three runs (one earned) on six hits with 10 strikeouts and four walks in 13 innings; Nathalie Matson (L&C, RHP) went 1-1, allowing four runs on seven hits while striking out 10 and walking five in 12.1 innings; Jaime Kraushaar (Pacific, RHP) allowed seven runs on 23 hits with 11 walks and seven strikeouts in three games, going 2-1.

April 18

NWC Hitter of the Week: Gretchen Ruecker (PLU, So., IF, Hillsboro, Ore.) went 11/17 with three doubles, two triples and a home run, while driving in 12 runs and scoring 10 in six games.
Honorable Mention: Kelly Stewart (Linfield, OF) hit .533 (8/15) with a double, eight RBI and five runs scored while stealing five bases; Taja Nault (Whitworth, OF) went 4/7 with a home run, two doubles, two RBI and three runs in three games; Kayla Wells (UPS, IF) was 5/16 with two RBI and one run in six games; Tiffany Henning (L&C, 1B) was 4/7 with a triple and two runs in four games; Alison Hennes (Pacific, OF/DP) went 6/11 with one RBI.

Co-NWC Pitchers of the Week: Liz Coburn (Linfield, Sr., RHP, Albany, Ore.) went 2-0 with two complete games, allowing one run (unearned) on five hits with nine strikeouts and no walks in 12 innings; Jewel Koury (Pacific Lutheran, Sr., RHP, Tumwater, Wash.) went 3-0, including two complete games, allowing one run on seven hits with seven strikeouts and four walks in 16 innings.
Honorable Mention: Jo Sonnett (Whitworth, RHP) went 3-0, allowing two runs on seven hits while striking out ten and walking three in 18 innings; Jessica Roberts (UPS, RHP) went 4-1, allowing four runs on 15 hits with 23 strikeouts and three walks in 24 innings; Kayla Winkler (George Fox, RHP) went 0-1 despite allowing three runs (one earned) on 10 hits with six strikeouts and a walk in 10 innings.

April 11

NWC Hitter of the Week: Gretchen Ruecker (PLU, So., IF, Hillsboro, Ore.) hit .727 (8/11) with two home runs (including a grand slam), three doubles and four walks. She drove in 10 runs and scored six runs in four games.
Honorable Mention: Heather Wilson (Pacific, IF) went 6/14 while scoring eight runs and stealing 10 bases; Liz Coburn (Linfield, P) was 3/6 with a double, a home run and five RBI; Laura Romag (Whitworth, IF) went 6/13 with three doubles, scoring three times and driving in two runs.

NWC Pitcher of the Week: Jo Sonnett (Whitworth, So., RHP, Puyallup, Wash.) went 2-0 in three appearances, allowing two runs (one earned) and six hits in 16.2 innings. She struck out 15, walked none and finished with a 0.48 ERA.
Honorable Mention: Jewel Koury (PLU, RHP) went 2-0 in three appearances, allowing five runs (three earned) on 16 hits and six walks, striking out seven; Jaime Kraushaar (Pacific, RHP) went 2-0 in three appearances, allowing three runs on eight hits and five walks while striking out four; Michlle Morris (Linfield, RHP) went 2-1 in four appearances, allowing six runs on nine hits and eight walks with 10 strikeouts.

April 4

NWC Hitter of the Week: Shelly Steinke (Linfield, So., OF, Canby, Ore.) led the Wildcats to a 4-0 week by hitting .667 (10/15) with four doubles and four RBI. She also was 5/5 on stolen bases.
Honorable Mention: Gretchen Ruecker (PLU, IF) went 7/14 with a home run, two doubles, four RBI and four runs scored in four games; Andraya Robertson (Whitworth, OF) hit .538 (7/13) with a home run, two doubles, five RBI and three runs scored; Marisa Gillaspie (UPS, IF) was 6/13 with four RBI and three runs scored in four wins; Janet Freerks (L&C, P/DH) went 6/11 with four RBI and two runs in four games; Cari Schruth (Willamette) went 7/10 with two RBI and six runs scored in four games.

NWC Pitcher of the Week: Jessica Roberts (UPS, Fr., Sumner, Wash.) went 2-0 in two starts, with a no-hitter in her first career start on Saturday. She allowed four runs (none earned) on three hits and six walks with seven strikeouts.
Honorable Mention: Michelle Morris (Linfield, RHP) went 2-0, allowing two earned runs on nine hits and two walks with 14 strikeouts; Candace Howard (PLU) went 2-0, allowing seven runs on 17 hits with 14 strikeouts and four walks; Jo Sonnett (Whitworth, RHP) went 1-1 in four appearances, allowing three earned runs on 20 hits with 19 strikeouts and six walks in 17 innings.

March 28

NWC Hitter of the Week: Janet Freerks (Lewis & Clark, Fr., P, Pleasant Hill, Ore.) went 9/19 (.473) in six games with three doubles. She drove in seven runs, scored three times and stole one base.
Honorable Mention: Shelly Steinke (Linfield, OF) went 9/28 with three doubles in eight games, scoring five runs and driving in five; Andraya Robertson (Whitworth, OF) went 7/15 with a double, two RBI and two runs scored in five wins; Jewel Koury (PLU) went 5/13 with two home runs and five RBI in four games; Cassie Halvorson (George Fox, OF) went 8/22 with two doubles, a triple, two RBI and nine runs scored in six games.

NWC Pitcher of the Week: Jo Sonnett (Whitworth, So., RHP, Puyallup, Wash.) went 2-0 with a save in three appearances. She allowed one run on eight hits in 15.1 innings, including two complete games, striking out nine and walking four.
Honorable Mention: Lacy Wade (George Fox, RHP) went 2-0 in four appearances, allowing three runs (two earned) on 11 hits with seven walks and eight strikeouts; Liz Coburn (Linfield, RHP) went 3-1 with four complete games, allowing seven runs and striking out 18 batters.

March 21

NWC Hitter of the Week: Tara Jansson (UPS, Jr., IF, Enumclaw, Wash.) hit .464 (13/28) with two doubles, a triple, four runs batted in and 10 runs scored in eight games at the SunWest Tournament.
Honorable Mention: Jewel Koury (PLU, IF) went 5/13 with a home run, two doubles, four RBI and four runs scored in four games; Aubri Azzarito (Whitworth, IF) went 4/11 with a triple, a double, five RBI and three runs scored in four wins;

NWC Pitcher of the Week: Alana Klaus (Whitworth, Jr., RHP, Spokane, Wash.) went 2-0 with a save to lead the Pirates to a 4-0 weekend at the SunWest Tournament. She allowed five runs (four earned) in 16.2 innings with 25 strikeouts and six walks.
Honorable Mention: Sarah Diamond (PLU) went 1-1, allowing five runs (two earned) in 13.1 innings with 12 strikeouts and five walks.

March 14

NWC Hitter of the Week: Alana Klaus (Whitworth, Jr., P/DP, Spokane, Wash.) went 5/11 with three home runs and double in four wins at George Fox. She drove in six runs and scored four times.
Honorable Mention: Jessica Galloway (Linfield, DP) went 5/10 with a double, two RBI and a run scored in four wins; Alison Hennes (Pacific, DP) was 5/12 with a double, an RBI and two runs scored.

NWC Co-Pitchers of the Week: Michelle Morris (Linfield, Jr., RHP, Tillamook, Ore.) went 2-0 while pitching consecutive complete-game shutouts. She allowed only one hit and six walks, while striking out 10 batters; Jo Sonnett (Whitworth, So., RHP, Puyallup, Wash.) went 2-0 while pitching consecutive complete-game shutouts. She allowed only four hits and one walk, while striking out 15 batters.
Honorable Mention: Jaime Kraushaar (Pacific) went 1-1 in three appearances, including a two-hitter in a loss at Linfield, allowing three runs (none earned) and nine hits in 13.2 innings with three strikeouts.

March 7

NWC Hitter of the Week: Jewel Koury (PLU, Sr., DP, Tumwater, Wash.) went 7/14 with two home runs, a triple, a double and 10 runs batted in as the Lutes went 2-2 in four games.
Honorable Mention: Jimo Fujimoto (Pacific, OF) went 5/10 with three runs scores, two RBI and a stolen base in four wins; Tara Jannson (UPS, IF) was 5/11 with a home run in four games; Cari Struth (Willamette, C) went 4/8 with a triple and five runs scored in four wins; Randi Miura (L&C, C) batted 6/9 with two RBI in four losses; Patti Stranger (Whitworth, OF) hit 5/11 with two runs scored and two stolen bases; Katie Plumb (George Fox, SS) was 4/10 with two doubles and two RBI in four losses; Shelly Steinke (Linfield, OF) went 4/13 with a double and one RBI.

NWC Co-Pitchers of the Week: Nikki Smith (Pacific, Fr., Gaston, Ore.) went 4-0 against PLU and UPS, with two complete-game victories and two wins in relief. She allowed six earned runs and 16 hits in 21 innings, striking out 22 batters and walking seven others; Teren Edgecombe (Willamette, Sr., Puyallup, Wash.) won two games and saved another in a Bearcat sweep of George Fox. She allowed two runs (one earned) on six hits in 15 innings, striking out eight and walking one.
Honorable Mention: Liz Coburn (Linfield) went 2-0 with two complete games, allowing one run on 12 hits with five strikeouts and one walk; Alana Klaus (Whitworth) was 1-1 with two runs allowed (one earned) in 14 innings with 19 strikeouts and three walks; Kelsey Weidkamp (UPS) went 1-1 with one earned run in 13 innings; Candace Howard (PLU) was 1-1 in 8.1 innings, allowing six runs (one earned) on seven hits with four walks and 11 strikeouts.
