NWC Men's Soccer Players of the WeekOct. 6Offense – John Brookover (Whitworth, Jr./MF Boise, Idaho/Boise) scored the first goal of the match, then the match winner in overtime in the game against Whitman. No team, much less a single player, had scored more than one goal in a match against the Missionaries this season. Defense – Derek MacLean (Pacific Lutheran, Jr./D Seattle, Wash./Kennedy) has become the anchor of the PLU back line in place of graduated 2007 NWC Defensive POY Brian Lubeck. He led the Lutes to a pair of shutout victories this week. Sept. 29Offense – Michael Iacolucci (Pacific, So./F Seattle, Wash./Nathan Hale) scored both the first goal and the game-winner in Pacific’s 3-2 overtime victory over Linfield. An apparent third goal was waived off on an offside call. The goals were his second and third of the season. Defense – Greg Saetrum (Puget Sound, So./GK Boise, Idaho/Timberline) pitched a pair of shutouts in goal for the Loggers this week on arguably the toughest road trip in the Northwest Conference. Sept. 22Offense – Stephen Phillips (Whitman, Sr./M/F Sandy, Utah/Waterford School) helped Whitman complete its weekend road split by sparking Whitman’s second-half rally at Linfield. He assisted on the goal that evened the game at 1-1 and then booted the game-winner with just three seconds left in overtime. Defense – Daniel Mangum (Pacific Lutheran, So./GK Bothell, Wash./Juanita) racked up 11 saves in a 0-0, two overtime tie against Pacific. Sept. 15Offense - Danny Williams (Pacific, Sr./M Eugene, Ore./Sheldon/Concordia Univ.) scored the game-winning goal on a penalty kick in Sunday's match against Mary and assisted on the game-winner in double overtime against College of Idaho. So far, Danny has scored five goals in the Boxers' first six matches. His five goals and 12 points currently lead the NWC. The five goals gives Danny 28 for his Pacific career, placing him one behind Rusty Sandusky for second on Pacific's all-time goals list. Defense - Joe Locasio (Linfield, Jr. Salem, Ore./Southridge) made 11 saves during 180 minutes of action and posted a shutout versus Cal-State East Bay. Against Claremont-Mudd-Scripps, he allowed one early goal but continued on to make six solid saves on the day. Sept. 8Offensive - Kurtis Wong (Linfield, Jr., F; Lake Forest Park, Wash./Shorecrest) tallied eight points, including three goals and two assists, in a 7-0 rout of NW Christian, the second highest point total in program history. It was also the second-most goals ever scored in a Linfield soccer match. Defensive - Brett Axelrod (Whitman, senior, goalkeeper; Union NJ / Union HS) faced 26 shots, making nine saves, while posting back-to-back double-overtime shutouts during the past week, and recording his third straight 2OT shutout. He has given up just one goal in four double-overtime games to start the season. Sept. 1Men's Soccer Offensive - Todd Wallenius (Whitman, sophomore, forward; Oceanside CA/San Dieguito HS Academy) booted Whitman's only goal in a 1-1 double-overtime tie with NAIA's Westminster (14-5 last season) and scored the game's only goal in a 1-0 double-overtime victory over NCAA Div. II Dixie State. He played a total of 172 minutes as one of Whitman's forwards. Men's Soccer Defensive - Brett Axelrod (Whitman, senior, goalkeeper; Union NJ / Union HS) made six saves against 23 shots against Westminster, preserving a 1-1 tie for Whitman with three saves in the second overtime, one of which was a kick save against a Westminster breakaway opportunity. He added three saves against nine shots in shutting out NCAA DII Dixie State . |
