Northwest Conference Track & Field Athletes of the Week
March 18
NWC Women’s Athlete of the Week: Kristen Shields (Whitworth, Sr., Grand
Coulee, Wash.) won the 100 dash in a Boppell Track record 12.17, won the 200
dash in an NCAA provisional qualifying time and Whitworth school record 25.07
and anchored Whitworth’s 4x100 relay to an NCAA provisional qualifying time
of 48.86 at the Whitworth Open.
Honorable Mention: Juli Huddleston (Linfield) won the pole vault with an NCAA
provisional qualifying mark of 10’-11.75” at the Bruin Open; DeeDee Arnall (Pacific)
won the javelin by 20 feet with a throw of 135’-0” at the Bruin Open; Michelle
Forbes (George Fox) won the high jump (5’3.5”) at the Bruin Open.
NWC Men’s Athlete of the Week: Tyler May (Willamette, Jr., Florence,
Ore.) rallied from third place on the second day to win his second consecutive
NWC Decathlon title with an NCAA provisional qualifying (and national leading)
score of 6,507. He had the second day’s best marks in the 110 hurdles and discus
throw to jump into first place.
Honorable Mention: Ben Dillow (George Fox) finished second in the NWC Decathlon
with an NCAA provisional qualifying score of 6,247 and also finished 5th in
the 100 (11.75), 10th in the javelin (152-10) and 14th in the discus (106-03)
at the Bruin Open; Bo Lockhart (Linfield) won the shot-put (49’3.5”) with the
NWC’s second-best mark this season and the 10th best in Linfield history; Ben
Rorem (Whitworth) won the 100 dash (10.91) with the second best time in the
NWC this season.
March 11
NWC Women’s Athlete of the Week: Carrie Larson (PLU, Sr., Bellingham,
Wash.) set a Shotwell meet record and a Baker Stadium record while winning the
400 hurdles in an NCAA provisional qualifying time of 1:02.74. She was also
third in the 100 (12.93).
Honorable Mention: Katie Heaton (UPS) won the pole vault at the Shotwell Invitational
with an NCAA provisional and NWC-best mark of 11’-5.25”; Kristen Shields (Whitworth)
won the 200 in an NCAA provisional and NWC-best time of 25.25 and also finished
third in the 400 (59.87) at the Pelluer Invitational; Michelle Forbes (George
Fox) won the high jump (5’-4.5”) in with an NCAA provisional mark and finished
4th in the long jump (16’-8.75”); Joni Claypool (Linfield) won the shotput (41’-9.75”)
at the Shotwell meet.
NWC Men’s Athlete of the Week: Seth Harris (George Fox, Fr., Boise,
Idaho) won the 400 hurdles with an NCAA provisional qualifying time of 53.04
and anchored the winning 4x400 relay to an NCAA provisional time of 3:16.14
at the GFU All-Comers meet. He also was second in the 110 hurdles (15.32).
Honorable Mention: Chris Boock (Linfield) won the 100 (11.03) and 200 (22.27)
at the Shotwell Invitational; Andy Holden (PLU) won the shot put (48’-8”) and
also finished seventh in the hammer (133’-8”) and ninth in the discus (130’-0”)
at the Shotwell meet.
March 4
NWC Men’s Athlete of the Week: Brandon Hazenberg (Linfield, So., Newberg,
Ore.) won the high jump at the L&C Invitational with an NCAA provisional mark
of 6’-8”. He also won the long jump (21’-7”) and finished second in 100 dash
(11.42).
Honorable Mention: Matt Gassaway (George Fox) won the javelin (192’-8”) at L&C
with a provisional NCAA mark; Frank Prince (UPS) won the 5,000 at Whitworth
with a track record time of 14:58.00; Lucas Setere (Pacific) won the 400 hurdles
at L&C in 54.29, the second best time in the NWC this season; Adam Harden (PLU)
won the shot put at WWU with the NWC’s second best mark of 49’-9.25”; Kris Sauer
(Whitworth) won the 800 at the Whitworth Invite in 1:55.72, the second best
time in the NWC this year; Nate Matlock (Willamette) threw an NCAA provisional
mark in the javelin (175'-8") at the Willamette Invitational.
NWC Women’s Athlete of the Week: DeeDee Arnall (Pacific, So., Warrenton,
Ore.) provisionally qualified for the NCAA Championships while winning the javelin
at the L&C Invitational with a throw of 136’-9”.
Honorable Mention: Edralynn Harmon (Whitworth) won the pole vault with an NCAA
provisional qualifying mark of 10’-10” and also jumped 15-1 in the long jump
at the Whitworth Invite; Danielle Bielenberg (Linfield) won the shot put with
an NWC-best mark of 41’-10” and also won the discus (116-4) at L&C; Michelle
Forbes (George Fox) won the triple jump (34’-5.5”) at L&C; Julie Locke (PLU)
finished second in the shot put (37’-11.5”) and discus (127’-0”) at WWU; Molly
Schreiner (UPS) won the 800 (2:22.42) at Whitworth; Danya Rumore (Willamette)
ran the 5,000 in an NCAA provisional qualifying time of 17:30.43 at the Willamette
Invite.
March 28
NWC Women’s Athlete of the Week: Kristen Shields (Whitworth, Sr., Grand
Coulee, Wash.) set a new Whitworth record and provisionally qualified for the
NCAA Championships while winning the 100 dash at Azusa Pacific with an NWC-best
time of 12.11. Her 200 time (25.50) was also a conference best, as was the 4x100
relay time (49.89) that she anchored.
Honorable Mention: Jazzmin Reece (Willamette) ran 14.94 in the 100 hurdles at
the Stanford Invite, setting a new school record and provisionally qualifying
for the NCAA Championships; Michelle Forbes (George Fox) high-jumped 5’-6” at
the Stanford Invitational, posting a provisional national qualifying mark.
Co-NWC Men’s Athletes of the Week: Jacob Stout (Willamette, Sr., Brush
Prairie, Wash.) ran the 5,000 meters in 14:22.28 at the Stanford Invitational,
setting a conference-best time by more than a minute and automatically qualifying
for the NCAA Championship meet; Matt Gassaway (George Fox, Jr., Washougal, Wash.)
threw the Javelin 203’-4” at the Univ. of Texas-Arlington Invitational, setting
the best mark to date for NCAA Division III throwers and provisionally qualifying
for nationals.
March 21
NWC Women’s Athlete of the Week: Lindsey Patterson (Willamette, So.,
Vancouver, Wash.) jumped to an NWC-best mark and provisionally qualified for
the NCAA championships in the long jump with a distance of 18’-5” at the Oregon
Preview meet.
Honorable Mention: Sadie Grossman (L&C) won the 5k at the Oxy Distance Carnival
in an NWC-best 17:50.53, setting a new school record; Michelle Forbes (George
Fox) high jumped 5’-4.5” at the Cal Poly Invitational; Kristen Shields (Whitworth)
won the 100 at the Dusty Lane in an NWC-best 12.63 and also won the 200 (26.06).
Co-NWC Men’s Athletes of the Week: Jonas Welsch (Willamette, Sr., Salem,
Ore.) won the long jump at the Oregon Preview with an NWC-best and NCAA provisional
qualifying mark of 23’-6”; Seth Harris (George Fox, Fr., Boise, Idaho) posted
an NWC-best and NCAA provisional qualifying time in the 400 hurdles at the Cal
Poly Invitational with a mark of 53.89.
Honorable Mention: Matt Welch (L&C) won the 100 (10.6) and 200 (22.5) at the
Occidental Invitational with a pair of hand-timed marks.
March 14
NWC Women’s Athlete of the Week: Michelle Forbes (George Fox, Jr., Jackson,
Wyo.) won the high jump at the George Fox Six-Way with an NCAA provisional qualifying
mark of 5’-6.5” and also finished second in the triple jump (33’-5.25”).
Honorable Mention: Shannon McGrane (Willamette) won the 400 hurdles at the GFU
six-way meet in an NCAA provisional qualifying time of 1:03.11 and also finished
third in the 100HH in 15.80; Jody Swan (L&C) won the 400 at George Fox in 57.97,
just missing an NCAA qualifying time, and also finished second (by judges decision)
in the 200 (25.99); Danielle Bielenberg (Linfield) won both the shot put (40-9.5)
and the discus (117-1) at George Fox; Julie Locke (PLU) won the discus (129-6)
and finished second in the shot put (37-1.25) at the Salzman Invitational; Allison
Ingram (Pacific) won the hammer throw (133-4) at the GFU six-way.
NWC Men’s Athlete of the Week: Jacob Stout (Willamette, Sr., Brush Prairie,
Wash.) set new Willamette and GFU Colcord Field records while winning the 3,000
Steeplechase in an NCAA automatic qualifying time of 9:01.11.
Honorable Mention: Dan McClean (UPS) finished second in the mile at the NCAA
Indoor Track & Field championships, running 3:53.43; Ben Salisbury (George Fox)
won the 100 (10.94) and the 200 (21.77), the latter in NCAA provisional time,
and participated on the winning 4x100 and 4x400 relays at the GFU six-way meet;
Lucas Setere (Pacific) won the 400 hurdles (55.17) at George Fox; Dayson Tiogangco
(Linfield) won the pole vault (14-11) at George Fox; Dan Haakenson (PLU) won
the hammer (178-6) and finished sixth in the discus (136-11) at the Salzman
Invitational.
March 7
NWC Women’s Athlete of the Week: Leslie Nelson (Whitworth) won the 10,000
meter run at Willamette in an NCAA provisional qualifying time of 37:30.7.
Honorable Mention: Sadie Grossman (L&C) won the 10K at the Puget Sound meet
in a school record and NCAA provisional qualifying time of 37:43.28; Caitlin
Mahoney (Linfield) won the high jump (5-4) and placed third in the 100 hurdles
(16.82).
NWC Men’s Athlete of the Week: Dan McLean (Puget Sound, Sr., Seattle,
Wash.) posted Division III’s fasted indoor mile to date with a time of 4:06.76,
qualifying for the NCAA Division III Indoor Track & Field championships.
Honorable Mention: Steve Bianchi (L&C) won the triple jump at UPS with a mark
of 41’-11.25” while also placing second in the 100 dash, 200 dash and high jump;
Seth Harris (George Fox) won both the 110 hurdles (15.85) and 400 hurdles (55.74)
and anchored the winning 4x400 relay (3:22.93) at the Linfield Icebreaker; Chris
Boock (Linfield) won the 100 (11.22) and finished fourth in the 200 (22.80)
at the Icebreaker.
