2008-09 NWC Women's Tennis Student-Athletes of the Week

April 13

Abby Olbrich (Linfield, Fr. Vancouver, Wash./Skyview) won her 17th consecutive singles match by without losing a set at No.2 Singles this week against Willamette. She also won at No. 1 Doubles, 8-4. As a freshman, Olbrich completed the regular season with a 14-0 record versus conference opponents while playing either No. 1 or No. 2 positions.

April 6

Shannon Palmer (Willamette, Fr. Salem, Ore) went 2-0 at #1 singles (6-1, 6-1 and 6-2, )6-1 and 2-0 at #1 doubles (802 and 8-6) during the week, as Willamette won a pair of NWC matches. She has provided the Bearcats with solid play against some of the top singles players in the conference this spring.

March 30

Amalia Nilsson (Lewis & Clark, So. Stockholm, Sweden/American School (Tokyo, Japan)) went 10-0 in singles and doubles this past week in five separate matches. Playing number one in each of the five, Nilsson won four of her five singles matches in straight sets, including a 6-0, 6-0 win against Whittier (Calif.). Nilsson helped the Pioneers win four of the five contests.

March 23

Sophie Larson (Linfield, So., Eugene, Ore. - Sheldon) won singles matches (#3 slot) at Lewis & Clark and Cal Lutheran. Her three-set win at CLU was the difference in a 5-4 victory. She also won twice at #1 doubles.

March 16

Mya Towne (Whitworth, Fr. Tucson, Ariz./Pusch Ridge Christian) led Whitworth to an unbeaten weekend, including a win over Linfield that ended the Wildcats' 108-match NWC winning streak.  She was the only Pirate player to finish 6-0 this weekend and she improved her NWC singles record to 8-0 this season.  She paired with Linh Aven in doubles and they are now 5-0 this season. Two of Towne's wins came in straight sets against Willamette and Lewis & Clark (6-2, 6-3 and 6-1, 6-2).

March 9

Shannon Palmer (Willamette, Fr. Salem, Ore./Sprague) returned to action after missing four matches do to illness and injury. She went 3-0 at #1 singles [(6-1, 6-3), (6-0, 6-1), (6-2, 6-1)} and was 3-0 (8-6, 8-6, 9-8 (11-9)) at #1 doubles during the week. Her efforts helped Willamette win all three matches.

March 2

Sallie Katter (Linfield, Jr. Salem, Ore./South Salem) won each of her matches at No. 1 singles  as Linfield went 3-0 for the weekend. Katter won each singles match in straight sets (7-5, 6-1 against Willamette, 6-1, 6-0 against George Fox and 6-1, 6-2 against Pacific). She also won three doubles matches at No. 1 with partner Sophie Larson (8-2, 8-1, and 8-4).

Feb. 23

Elise Otto (Whitman, So. Spokane, Wash./Lewis & Clark) did more than her part on the road for Whitman, winning twice at No. 1 singles (6-3, 6-0 and 6-1, 6-1) and twice at No. 1 doubles (8-6 and 8-3) against Pacific and George Fox. Whitman remained undefeated in NWC play.

Feb. 16

Sallie Katter (Linfield, Jr. Salem, Ore./South Salem) won both her singles (6-1, 6-3 and 6-1, 6-1) and doubles matches at No. 1 singles and No. 1 doubles (8-1 and 8-3), helping the Wildcats win conference road matches against Pacific Lutheran and Puget Sound.
