2011 NWC Women's Tennis Student-Athletes of the Week

April 12

Elise Otto

Whitman, Senior

Spokane, Wash.

Otto helped Whitman nail down the third seed with road victories at Puget Sound and Pacific Lutheran. She won twice at No. 1 singles and worked with a different doubles partner (Emily Rolston) in winning twice at No. 1 doubles. Otto has moved well past the 100 career-victory (singles, doubles) mark in her four seasons at Whitman.

April 5

Rachel Burns

Whitworth, Senior

Longview, Wash.

Burns won both of her singles matches against two of the top singles players in the NWC (Goya of Pacific and Roberg of Whitman). She helped Whitworth near the 2011 NWC regular season title and extend its winning streak to 14 in a row.

March 29

Elise Otto

Whitman, Senior

Spokane, Wash.

Otto won three of four matches at No. 2 singles, one of which was a three-set victory over Chapman’s Kelly Fox, who holds a No. 11 singles ranking in the West Region. Otto also teamed with sophomore Alyssa Roberg to win two of four matches at No. 1 doubles, one of which was an 8-5 victory over Chapman’s Fox-Lewis. Unable to convert two match points, Otto and Roberg lost 9-7 to a Redlands duo, and lost 8-6 to a CMS duo that won last fall’s ITA Small College national doubles title.

March 22

Shaina Inn

George Fox, Freshman

Honolulu, Hawaii

Inn went 6-2 (3-1 in singles, 3-1 in doubles) in 2-2 week for the Bruins, the last three matches on their spring break trip to Orlando, Fla. She picked up the Bruins’ only two wins in a 7-2 loss to Hardin-Simmons. Her only two losses of the week were against #26 nationally-ranked UW-Whitewater. She has been a key player in GFU’s improvement from 0-17 last year to 4-7 this year.

March 15

Rachel Burns

Whitworth, Senior

Longview, Wash.

Burns defeated Linfield’s Abby Olbrich in impressive fashion to help the Pirates team claim the battle of unbeaten on Friday. She also won in straight sets against PLU’s Leah Newell on Saturday. She teamed with Alli Marshall to split the No. 1 doubles matches.

March 8

Alyssa Roberg

Whitman, Sophomore

Scotts Valley, Calif.

Roberg enjoyed a perfect weekend, winning twice at No. 2 singles and twice at No. 1 doubles. She had two of Whitman’s three team points against defending champion Whitworth, beating Alli Marshall 6-4, 6-1 in singles and teaming with Elise Otto for an 8-3 victory over Marshall and Rachel Burns. Roberg is ranked No. 12 regionally in singles and No. 4 (with Otto) in doubles.
