NWC announces Student-Athletes of the Week

HILLSBORO, Ore. - The Northwest Conference is proud to announce its Student-Athlete of the Week recipients for the week of September 18th to September 24th.

 

Women's Soccer

Offensive Student-Athlete of the Week –  Gena Main, Willamette
Defensive Student-Athlete of the Week – Brianna Hunting, Pacific Lutheran

Main (San Francisco, Calif.) scored two goals during the week with one goal in each of Willamette's wins. She scored the second goal in a 2-0 victory over Puget Sound in a battle of regionally ranked teams (WU #7; PS #9). She provided the winning goal at 79:38 to break a 1-1 tie in the Bearcats' 2-1 victory over George Fox. Main took 5 shots during the week with 4 shots on goal.

Hunting (Kennewick, Wash.) played all 180 minutes over the weekend, helping the Lutes earn a pair of road shutouts against two conference opponents. She limited George Fox to just five total shots and just one on frame and limited Linfield to just two shots on goal on Sunday. 

 

Men's Soccer

Offensive Student-Athlete of the Week – Drew Williams, Whitworth
Defensive Student-Athlete of the Week – Jesus Nunez, Whitworth

Williams (Spokane, Wash.) had a dominant weekend offensively, playing a role in three of Whitworth's four goals on the weekend. The junior scored twice against PLU on Sunday after assisting on Whitworth's only goal against Puget Sound the day prior.

Nunez (Turlock, Calif.) allowed just one goal and saved nine shots last weekend. The junior shut out Pacific Lutheran with six saves on Sunday to keep Whitworth undefeated in NWC play. 

 

Volleyball

Offensive Student-Athlete of the Week – Jessica Schmautz, Whitworth
Defensive Student-Athlete of the Week – Isabella Zubrod, Pacific Lutheran

Schmautz (Spokane, Wash.) averaged 4.36 kills and hit .313 in three matches, including two road victories in conference play. She added 2.09 digs per set, three services aces and 0.73 blocks per set. In all, she averaged 5.1 points per set as Whitworth improved to 10-4 overall and 4-0 in the NWC.

Zubrod (Puyallup, Wash.) tallied a double-double in both matches as the ninth-ranked Lutes remained undefeated in NWC play. Zubrod had 21 assists and 12 digs in a 3-set win over Puget Sound before collecting 14 assists and 12 digs in a 3-0 win over Willamette. She averaged 4.0 digs per set and 5.8 assists per set while also adding 14 kills and three aces. 

 

Men's Golf

Student-Athlete of the Week – Derrick Phelps, Whitworth

Phelps (Zillah, Wash.) led Whitworth to the team title with a medalist finish in his first tournament with the Pirates. He was under par both rounds. His score of 69 in the first round tied two other golfers for the best round of the tournament.

 

Women's Golf

Student-Athlete of the Week – Maggie Peters, Whitworth

Peters (West Linn, Ore.) dominated the season-opening tournament with an eight-stroke victory. Her round of 70 was six strokes better than any other round in the tournament. She led the Pirates to a 21-stroke victory as a team.
