Student-Athletes of the Week Announced

HILLSBORO, Ore. – The Northwest Conference is proud to announce its Student-Athlete of the Week recipients for the week of October 2nd to October 8th.


Women's Golf

Student-Athlete of the Week – Alex McMenamin, George Fox

McMenamin (Sequim, Wash.) won a playoff hole over teammate Iris Kawada to win the Culturame Classic out of 36 golfers. She finished with a score of 150 (76-74).


Men's Golf

Student-Athlete of the Week – Trent Jones, Willamette

Jones (Kenmore, Wash.) won the individual championship at the George Fox Invitational with a score of 142 (71-71). He shot a 1-under-par 71 in each round to win the title by 4 strokes. He finished strong in the second round with birdies on the 14th, 15th and 17th holes. He helped Willamette win the team title by 9 strokes at 586 (293-293).


Women's Tennis

Student-Athlete of the Week – Michelle Uyeda, Linfield

Uyeda (Kailua-Kone, Hawaii) squared off with Andrea Gu of Whitman for the ITA Regional Championship title. Uyeda and Gu were well matched, but Uyeda claimed the ITA Regional Singles Championship in straight sets, winning 7-5 and 6-3. Uyeda and partner Harris also took second in the doubles championship.



Offensive Student-Athlete of the Week – Lauren Budde, Whitworth
Defensive Student-Athlete of the Week – Caylie Shiramizu, Pacific Lutheran

Budde (Moraga, Calif.) led Whitworth to a pair of NWC victories by averaging 4.0 kills per set. She hit .512 for the week with kills on more than half of her total attacks. She averaged 4.3 points per set by adding 0.67 blocks.

Shiramizu (Honolulu, Hawaii) finished the week with 44 digs, averaging 6.3 per set in a pair of home victories against George Fox, 3-1, and Lewis & Clark, 3-0.


Men's Soccer

Offensive Student-Athlete of the Week – Hikaru Ichigi, Willamette
Defensive Student-Athlete of the Week – Matt Reich, Whitman 

Ichigi (Kobe, Japan) scored the game-winning goal at 97:50 in Willamette's 3-2 overtime win on the road against nearby rival Linfield. He took four shots during the game with two shots on goal. This year, Ichigi has scored three goals and three have been game-winners. The goal against Linfield was his first game-winner that broke a tie.

Reich (Rancho Santa Margarita, Calif.) lifted the Blues to a 2-1 overtime win at Whitworth in their lone game of the weekend. He allowed one goal in 91.5 minutes of play to record a .750 save percentage.


Women's Soccer

Offensive Student-Athlete of the Week – Sofia Ellington, Whitman
Defensive Student-Athlete of the Week – Jamie Lange, Puget Sound 

After a pair of goals to top Lewis & Clark, Ellington (Bend, Ore.) had a hand in three of her team's four goals in a win over George Fox. She assisted on two goals in the first half, then converted a late penalty kick to help send the game to overtime.

Lange (Lake Tapps, Wash.) allowed no goals and made 22 saves in 200 minutes of play to record a 1.000 save percentage. The Loggers recorded a win over Pacific Lutheran, 1-0, and tied with Linfield, 0-0.



Offensive Student-Athlete of the Week – Heisman Hosoda, Lewis & Clark
Defensive Student-Athlete of the Week – Zackary Teats, Puget Sound
Special Teams Student-Athlete of the Week – Anthony Louthan, Pacific Lutheran

Hosoda (Kaimuki, Hawaii) broke a school record for receptions in a single game with 17 against Puget Sound on Saturday. Hosoda totaled 162 yards, which moves him into the top five in the NWC in yards per game (73.8). His performance also moves him into sixth in the NWC in total receiving yards (295). 

Teats' (Reno, Nev.) 36-yard interception returned for a touchdown gave Puget Sound its first lead of the game, 21-20, after being down 20-0. He had a second interception in the game and made five tackles. 

Louthan (Montesano, Wash.) had 11 punts for 467 yards, averaging 42.5 yards/punt. Three landed inside the 20 and he booted two longer than 50 yards, including a career long 70-yarder. He also executed a fake punt, rumbling 31 yards on fourth down to setup the Lutes' first touchdown of the day in a win over Pacific.
