NWC Announces Student-Athletes of the Week

HILLSBORO, Ore. – The Northwest Conference is proud to announce Student-Athletes of the Week for the week of 10/16-10/22.

 

Women's Golf

Student-Athlete of the Week – Shiyang Fan, Whitman (Sr.)

Fan (San Diego, Calif.) won her second straight event to help her team to a second-place finish at the Confluence Health Classic. Her score of 68 on round one was a course (Wine Valley Country Club) record. She finished with a score of 141.

 

Men's Golf

Student-Athlete of the Week – Austin Darnell, Pacific Lutheran (So.)

Darnell (Mount Vernon, Wash.) shot an eight under 136 to win medalist honors out of 40 total golfers at the Confluence Health Classic. Pacific Lutheran had the top three individual finishers and earned the team title.

 

Volleyball

Offensive Student-Athlete of the Week – Jessica Schmautz, Whitworth (Sr., OH)
Defensive Student-Athlete of the Week – Michelle McGinn, Lewis & Clark (Fr., S)

Schmautz (Spokane, Wash.) averaged 5.57 kills per set in two Pirate victories. She hit .380 over two matches, committing only nine errors in 79 attacks. The senior has over 100 kills more than the player in the NWC with the next-highest total this season. 

McGinn (Kailua, Hawaii) had a career-high 23 digs in the Pioneers' win against third-place Puget Sound. The freshman also had a career-high 35 assists and added two service aces. The next day, McGinn totaled 12 digs and 15 assists in the Pioneers' win against Linfield. 

 

Men's Soccer

Offensive Student-Athlete of the Week – Peter Stephens, Whitman (So., F)
Defensive Student-Athlete of the Week – Wren Norwood, Puget Sound (Jr., GK)

Stephens (Newton, Mass.) scored a pair of critical goals over the weekend, both late equalizers to send both matches into overtime. The Blues tied with Puget Sound, 1-1, and Pacific Lutheran, 2-2.

Norwood (Kenai, Alaska) recorded 14 saves over the weekend to record a .875 save percentage in a 1-1 tie with Whitman and a 4-1 victory over Whitworth.

 

Women's Soccer

Offensive Student-Athlete of the Week – Gabbie Berg, Puget Sound (Jr., F)
Defensive Student-Athlete of the Week – Natalie Robinson, Pacific Lutheran (Sr., GK)

Berg (Draper, Utah) is the Loggers' overall leading scorer with six goals. She recorded both goals in a 2-1 victory over Willamette as the Loggers went 2-0 on the weekend.

Robinson (Seattle, Wash.) allowed just one goal over the weekend in 200 minutes of action, posting a shutout over George Fox and a .833 save percentage.

 

Football

Offensive Student-Athlete of the Week – JT Greenough, Pacific (Ore.) (Sr., QB)
Defensive Student-Athlete of the Week – Chad Wilburg, Whitworth (Sr., DE)
Special Teams Student-Athlete of the Week – Anthony Louthan, Pacific Lutheran (Sr., TE/FS)

Greenough (Tigard, Ore.) completed 16 of 33 passes for 296 yards and a career-high four touchdowns. He is the third NWC quarterback to throw at least four touchdowns in a game in 2018. He is the first Pacific quarterback since Campbell Summerfield threw four touchdown passes against Puget Sound in the 2016 season finale on November 12, 2016.

Three of Wilburg's (Sedro-Woolley, Wash.) five solo tackles went for loss. Two were sacks that totaled 20 yards. The senior forced a fumble with one of the sacks, which was recovered by Whitworth. He broke up two passes at the line of scrimmage and led a defensive effort that held the Loggers to their lowest point total of the season.

Louthan (Montesano, Wash.) landed all six of his punts inside the 20-yard line, including three landing inside the 10 while limiting Willamette to just 2 total return yards. The Lutes defeated the Bearcats 33-20.
