Student-Athlete of the Week Recipients Announced

HILLSBORO, Ore. – The Northwest Conference is proud to announce Student-Athletes of the Week for the week ending April 8th.


Baseball Pitching Student-Athlete of the Week –Justin Armbruester, Pacific Lutheran (So., P)

Armbruester (Sammamish, Wash.) struck out 10 in eight innings of work in a 3-0 shutout win over host Whitman.


Baseball Position Student-Athlete of the Week– Nicholas Nerud, Whitworth (Sr., IF)

Nerud (Valencia, Calif.), the starting shortstop, led Whitworth at the plate during the Pirates' sweep of Puget Sound. He hit .643 (9-14) and led the Bucs with six runs batted in, in addition to scoring four runs.


Men’s Golf Student-Athlete of the Week – Colin Rajczak, Puget Sound (Sr.)

Rajczak (Orinda, Calif.) tied for first-place out of 33 golfers at the NWC North over the weekend, scoring a 72. 


Women’s Golf Student-Athlete of the Week– Shiyang Fan, Whitman (Sr.)

Fan (San Diego, Calif.) won the Whitworth Women’s Invitational by six strokes after shooting four over par. 


Lacrosse Defensive Student-Athlete of the Week– Epi Roldan-Rayo, Linfield (So., GK)

Roldan-Rayo played the second half of two conference wins against Pacific and Puget Sound, allowing only one goal and recording four saves against the Loggers.


Lacrosse Offensive Student-Athlete of the Week– Jennifer Burke, George Fox (Jr., M)

Burke (Oregon City, Ore.) tied the team-high in points over the weekend with 14. She helped the Bruins beat Whitman, 23-15, and Whitworth, 21-0. She scored 11 goals and dished out three assists while grabbing four ground balls and winning nine draw controls. She also caused six turnovers and shot 85.7 percent on goal. 


Softball Pitching Student-Athlete of the Week– Shelby Saylors, Linfield (Sr., P)

Saylors (Rainier, Ore.) threw two complete game shutouts and picked up all three wins for Linfield against Whitworth. She recorded 16 strike outs on the weekend and gave up only one earned run. 


Softball Position Student-Athlete of the Week– Samantha Simundson, Pacific Lutheran (Sr., IF)

Simundson (Federal Way, Wash.) led the Lutes at the plate, hitting .583 with seven runs battedin and three extra base hits in a four-game sweep of Willamette. The senior boasted a .643 on base percentage and a 1.250 slugging percentage with five runs scored. She belted two home runs and one triple in the series while striking out just once. 


Men’s Tennis Student-Athlete of the Week– Will Leach, George Fox (So.) 

Leach (Portland, Ore.) led the Bruins to two big wins over two top-10 teams in the ITA West Region rankings. The Bruins beat No. 10 Pacific (Ore.) and No. 8 Lewis & Clark over the weekend. Will won all four of his matches and his win in singles against Lewis & Clark clinched the match for the Bruins.


Women’s Tennis Student-Athlete of the Week– Lisa Owen, Puget Sound (Jr.)

Owen (Honolulu, Hawaii) went undefeated between all four doubles and singles matches at the no. 1 spot in a win against Pacific Lutheran. 


Men’s Track & Field Track Student-Athlete of the Week– Aidan Verba-Hamilton, Lewis & Clark (So.)

Verba-Hamilton (San Francisco, Calif.) won the 200-meters at the Jenn Boyman Memorial Invitational, recording his best-ever finish in the event. The sophomore also helped the Pioneers to a 2nd place finish in the 4x100-meter relay with a time of 42.74 which is the Pioneers best time in this event this season. Verba-Hamilton's fifth-place finish in the 100-meter relay ties his best-ever finish in this event.


Men’s Track & Field Field Student-Athlete of the Week– Josh Huffman, Pacific (Ore.) (Sr.)

Huffman (Puyallup, Wash.) won the discus and took second in the shot put at the Jenn Boyman Memorial Invitational. His victory in the discus was by 20 inches over his closest competitor and was eight inches out of first in the shot put. He has won the discus in his last three meets.


Women’s Track & Field Track Student-Athlete of the Week– Hazel Carr, Willamette (Sr.)

Carr (Seattle, Wash.) won the women's 5,000-meter run at the John Knight Twilight with a personal record time of 18:23.40. She lowered her previous top time by 37.35 seconds. She took first place by 56 seconds.


Women’s Track & Field Field Student-Athlete of the Week– Emily Reeder, Pacific Lutheran (Fr.)

Reeder (Port Orchard, Wash.) won the shot put by 3 feet and the hammer throw by six feet to help the Lutes cruise to the meet victory at the Shotwell Invite.

The Pacific Lutheran V8 won the Lamberth Cup over Puget Sound by nearly five seconds before beating both UPS and Lewis & Clark at the Covered Bridge Regatta on Saturday. They beat Puget Sound by eight seconds and Lewis & Clark by over 43 at the Covered Bridge Regatta.
