Whitworth University Continues to Lead 2018-19 McIlroy-Lewis All-Sports Trophy Race

HILLSBORO, Ore. - Whitworth University remains in the lead of the Northwest Conference for the 2018-19 McIlroy-Lewis All-Sports trophy with 146 points after the winter season.

The Pirates earned a Northwest Conference Championship title in men's swimming, with the women swimming to a third-place team finish. Men’s basketball finished second in final standings, with women’s basketball finishing the season tied for fourth. 

The University of Puget Sound moves from third place into second place with 122 points.  The Loggers finished the winter ranked third in women's basketball and men’s swimming, fourth in men's basketball, and fifth in women’s swimming.  Pacific Lutheran University moves down one spot from second to third with 120 points. The Lutes finished fourth in women’s swimming, sixth in men’s swimming and women’s basketball, and seventh in men’s basketball.

Whitman College moves into fourth place after finishing the fall season tied for sixth. The Blues boasted men’s basketball regular-season and NWC Championship titles, as well as a women’s swimming title. Women’s basketball finished the season in second, and men’s swimming finished fourth at the NWC Championships. The Blues ended the winter season with 116 points. Linfield College earned 98 points to rank fifth with second-place finishes in men’s and women’s swimming, edging Willamette University’s 94 points. 

George Fox University (88 points), Pacific University (Ore.) (65 points), and Lewis & Clark College (45 points) round out the final spots in the McIlroy-Lewis All-Sports trophy standings.  The Bruins picked up 18 points with an NWC Conference title in women's basketball in addition to their regular season title.

The Northwest Conference All-Sports Trophy recognizes athletic excellence among Northwest Conference institutions across all fields of competition. It is named in honor of John Lewis, the baseball coach (1947-72), basketball coach (1947-67) and athletics director (1952- 72) at Willamette University; and Jane McIlroy, Linfield College's women's athletics director and physical education professor from 1950-82 who also coached field hockey (1952-81), basketball, volleyball, softball and tennis.
