CLAREMONT, Calif. --- The Whitman women’s tennis teams advanced to the second round after a convincing sweep over UT Tyler in the first round of the NCAA DIII Women’s Tennis Championships. Though the Blues battled into the post season, No.3 Claremont-Mudd-Scripps proved to be too much for Whitman, as the Athenas ended Whitman’s playoff run in the second round clinching the win.
Earning their second consecutive automatic berth into the tournament via the Northwest Conference Tournament championships and were dominant from the outset against the representatives of the American Southwest Conference.
The Blues began their first match sweeping all three doubles sets against UT Tyler. Redkina and Greenberg, who were competing on courts five and four respectively, were on top of their game from the first game of their singles matches and ended up winning in straight sets to cruise to the victory.
The doubles sweep on the day was the first time the Blues had swept doubles against a ranked opponent on the season and was also the first time all season that Whitman swept a team that entered the match ranked in 2017-2018.
In the second round match, the Athena’s swept their way through doubles play 3-0 before clinching the first two points of singles play to earn the victory. The loss sent Whitman (12-9) home having gone one round further than they did the year before, losing in the second round of the NCAA Women's Tennis Regionals.
