HILLSBORO, Ore. – The Northwest Conference men's and women's golf teams will face off this weekend at the NWC Spring Classic, hosted by Pacific Lutheran University at Olympia Country Club in Olympia, Wash.
The nationally second-ranked George Fox women claimed the NWC Fall Classic title for the fifth consecutive season with a team score of 635 to rank first in conference standings, edging second-ranked Whitman’s 642 team score. Lewis & Clark took third with a team score of 670.
Whitworth recorded a score of 684 to finish fourth, followed by Pacific’s 719 and Pacific Lutheran’s 729 finish. Puget Sound rounded out the tournament with a 768 finish.
Whitman’s Shiyang Fan, an NCAA All-American and All-NWC first-team selection, was the individual medalist with a 73-76=149 five over par, followed by a three-way tie for second-place between Emma Beyer of Whitman, and All-NWC first-team selections Kayle Hunn and Iris Kawada of George Fox, with an individual score of 157.
Day one pairings will see Whitman’s Fan tee off against Pacific’s Briana Finau and Willamette’s Lexi Towner, with Beyer facing Pacific’s Hannah Thornburg and Willamette’s Kristen Barclay. Hunn is paired with Whitworth’s Maggie Peters and Puget Sound’s Kristi Koyanagi, while Kawada will face the Pirates’ Allie Slingsby and the Loggers’ Emmi Modahl. Lewis & Clark’s Kamryn Ford will match up against Pacific Lutheran’s Sami Briney and Linfield’s Katy Mahr.
Voted as the preseason favorite, George Fox heads into the Spring Classic coming off of a first-place finish out of seven teams at the USCS Invitational, where Rachel Drgastin earned individual medalist honors. The Bruins are after their third consecutive NWC Spring Classic title.
The Whitworth men’s team claimed the NWC Fall Classic title in the fall with a score of 600 to earn 16 points and a first-place conference ranking. The Pirates were followed by Willamette’s 604 finish, and reigning champions Pacific Lutheran’s third-place finish with a 607.
The George Fox Bruins finished fourth at the Fall Classic with a score of 612, followed by Linfield’s 625 fifth-place finish. The Loggers came in sixth, recording a 633 score ahead of Lewis & Clark’s 650 finish, Pacific’s 671, and Whitman’s 688 score.
PLU’s Jordan Brajcich was the individual medalist after an impressive 68-76=144 finish to record a one-stroke victory over Whitworth’s Derrick Phelps (72-73=145). George Fox’s Mason Koch finished one stroke behind Phelps with a 73-73=146.
Day one men’s pairings will see defending individual champion Brajcich tee off against Puget Sound’s Cole Albert and Whitman’s Nick Xiang. Whitworth’s Phelps will face George Fox’s Koch, a 2018 All-NWC first-team selection. Nationally 19th-ranked Willamette will see freshman Austin Davis face Linfield’s Isaac Grebisz and Pacific’s Zachariah Rodriguez.
The Pirates enter the Spring Classic after a first-place finish at the NWC North tournament this past weekend, where Phelps, PLU’s Austin Darnell, and Puget Sound’s Colin Rajczak tied for first, each scoring a 72. The nationally 14th-ranked Lutes will seek to claim the Spring Classic title to gain momentum over the Pirates heading into the NWC Championship, later this month.
